i applied for my parents extension and it was approved. i applied before 2 and half month of there I-94 expiration and i received approval in 1 and half months. I had a reason as my wife was pregnant. you can apply for it at the most they will be denied thats it nothing happens to there visa which they already have. hope this helps..
