Analysis literally means"a breaking up". Thus you can understand something by taking it apart into smaller or simpler modules/parts that can be more readily understood, perhaps comparing them with other similar things like a mathematical formula, and in the end considering how it works together as a whole. The opposite method is synthesis. This is building something up, by taking smaller parts and putting them together to make the whole.
