Immigration Voice is proud to announce the launch of Team IV, the walking/running club of Immigration Voice.
The goal of Team IV is to raise awareness about the issues faced by highly skilled legal immigrants in the communities we live in and garner support from fellow Legal Immigrants and US Citizens to further IV’s cause.
Team IV
The Walking/Running Club of Immigration Voice
See the list of Current Team IV Members (Updated 7/1/08): http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/showpost.php?p=259354&postcount=416
Mission
Team IV is the walking/running club of Immigration Voice. Team IV’s Mission is to raise awareness for the issues faced by Legal Immigrants and to promote a sense of community by participation in walking/running events throughout the U.S.
Team IV’s goal is to have over 150 members and raise at least $45,000 to support Immigration Voice and help prevent childhood obesity in the United States.
Join Team IV
Team IV members will be working towards accomplishing the following goals:
1. Raise awareness of Immigration Voice within our local communities and on a national stage.
2. Accomplish personal goals of walking/running short to long distance walks/runs and lead a healthy lifestyle.
3. Build a professional network of Team IV members across the country.
4. Support fundraising efforts of Immigration Voice for future lobbying efforts.
5. Help fight childhood obesity by partnering with a not for profit organization The Alliance For A Healthier Generation whose mission is to prevent childhood obesity in the United States.
Team IV Benefits
Team IV members will receive tips and guidance from Personal Trainers via the Team IV Blog site at http://teamiv-year2008.blogspot.com/. Team IV members will also get a T Shirt and fundraising ideas/materials to reach their pledge goals.
Check out our Blog: http://teamiv-year2008.blogspot.com/ (Also look for Tips of the Day on this blog from your Team Captain)
Team IV is not an individual event! We strongly encourage family members to join us, which is why we have two membership types: Individual and Family. The Individual Membership has an annual fee of $50 while the Family Membership has a $75 yearly fee. The Fundraising goal of the Individual Membership is $300/member per year, while that of the Family Membership is $500 per Family per year. These very nominal fundraising goals can be reached by one of more fundraising initiatives done by individual members or working together in small groups.
Team IV Events
Each Team IV Member will pledge to participate in at least one of the following three events. Participation includes walking, jogging or running any distance at one of the three Team IV events listed below. Team IV Members are responsible for registration at these events.
Golden Gate Park Cross Country 5K – San Francisco – August 17, 2008
Rediscovery 10K and 1 mile - Washington DC - October 19, 2008
Houston Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K – January 18, 2009
How To Join Team IV.
In Order to join Team IV, please send an e-mail to TeamIV@yahoo.com or send a Private Message to NolaIndian32 at www.ImmigrationVoice.org to receive a Membership Form. The Membership Form will be e-mailed to you.

Hi sweet23guyin,
We would have loved to pick the NYC ING Marathon, but it would be quite a bit of a challenge for us to coordinate Team IV participation at an event where the registration is controlled via a lottery system. We would like to get our first year successfully under our belts, and then we will certainly look into revisiting NYC's marathon.
The three events picked for 2008-2009 year are spread out across the US and they provide us with a range of distances to walk/run. I have spoken to the race directors and we are ready to coordinate registrations with them. I hope you will join us in our first year.
Best wishes,
NolaIndian

Hi PointlessWait,
The three events we will be walking/running as a Team are about getting our organization's name out in the open. This can help increase membership and further financial support for IV. By getting our name out there, we are sure to encounter more legal immigrants who may not be aware of IV as a resource. Thus introducing them to IV and providing them with a support network for their future immigration issues.
I have introduced this concept to several of my friends all of whom are US Citizens and each of them support legal immigrants who are here in the US working honest, legal jobs. Each of them have already promised that they will join Team IV and support the fundraising of $300 per Individual Member to support IV's longterm lobbying efforts.
IV has had some very significant successes over the past year and your continued support via Team IV can help with IV's long term goals.
I hope you will join us in this campaign!:)
Thanks,
NolaIndian

Thank you for your support.
NolaIndian sketched major events that we will join for sure. If we were not able to pick events in your area it is not because of lack of events but because of our limited resources.
What you can do is, join team IV, get the IV gear and run/ walk at the local events, you don't have to wait for us to include local events. Next time we will include that event on our calendar.
Hope this helps

Good point.

Thanks for reminding, this is an area worth exploring again. Are you an NETIP member? Maybe, you can help us facilitate this partnership. PM me your ph # and we can talk.

I am in - along with my husband (and he is going to kill me for signing him up ...he he) for the Houston 5K run - lets start with that and see if I can finish..I'll take on more if I have success with this!
BTW, there is also a kids run for children ages 5 to 15 (K - 8) - my kids won't qualify for it, but those that have kids in this age group can truly train as a family.

Thanks for signing up. The good part about these events is they are both Walking and running events so newbies should not hesitate to Join. We picked an event in Houston because Texas had the second highest number of letters for the Admin Fix campaign :)

Hi Guys,
I know some of you may have concerns about the distances at the three events we have picked so far. If you are new to walking/running, this would be a really good opportunity for you to start training with the support of Team IV members as well as two personal trainers who are going to give us support and feedback on a weekly basis. These trainers are doing this for Team IV for free, to help our Team. So we should really take advantage of such a bonus feature.
Starting your walking/running goals by attempting a 5K is a very good target to aim for. A 5K is 3.12 miles and you can walk this distance at a moderate pace, no not race walking, just a moderate pace in 45 mins. So this is quite a do-able distance. Also, you can train to jog or run the 5K in as little as a 6 or 8 weeks. Once you sign up with Team IV, we can provide you with more guidance. We have got the support of a couple of major names in the walking/running field.:)
So come on, join Team IV and lets get this ball running, or jogging, defintely walking.

The San Francisco 5K event is Aug 17, 2008 and as an added bonus, the registration fee for this event is included in your Team IV Membership Fee (if you sign up before July 15, 2008)!!
Please help support IV's fundraising project, and get the added bonus of leading a healthier lifestyle.

I like this plan of mine better than the runners world plan. Please see below if you are looking to run. This plan is tailored for a beginner.A friend of mine shared this with me like 6 years ago. She actually calls this plan a Couch to 5K plan :D. This plan recommends you run 3 times a week. so choose your 3 days with a day of rest in between.
Week1 - Walk 4 mins, run 1 minute ( repeat this 6 times = 30 mins)
Week2 - Walk 3 mins, run 2 mins (repeat this 6 times = 30 mins)
Week 3 - Walk 2 mins, run 3 mins(repeat this 6 times = 30 mins)
Week 4 - Walk 1 min, run 4 mins(repeat this 6 times = 30 mins)
Week 5 - Walk 1 min, run 6 mins (repeat this 6 times = 42 mins)
Week 6 - Walk 1 min, run 8 mins (repeat this 5 times = 45 mins)
Week 7 - Walk 1 min, run 9 mins ( repeat this 5 times = 50 mins)
Week 8 - Walk 1 min, run 9 mins (repeat this 4 times = 40 mins)
you are well onto your first 5 K in 8 weeks. The key is to focus on getting the distance first and not focus on the speed. The most important thing to remember is to listen to your body and respect it's limits.
We will be sharing some ongoing tips on running and fundraising as we move along

Raising $300 or $500 per membership is a very reasonable amount. If you try to join some other Running Teams, you will have to raise in excess of $3,500 in 1 year. And the only distance you can complete is a marathon.
I have run over 12 half marathons, 6 races in excess of 13.1 miles and 1 marathon and I learn't that a marathon is not for everyone - that is why we have included distances like 5K and 10 miles in our event list. This is a great opportunity to pursue a healthy lifestyle and in the process support IV's long term lobbying efforts. Lets not forget what IV has accomplished for us in the past 12 months (resolving the July 2 Fiasco, Multiple Year EAD).
This is an earnest call to all walkers, runners and supporters of IV. Come join Team IV!!:)
We are slowly building up our membership this week, and I am very thankful for those who support this initiative and those of you who have already joined up, we still have quite a ways to go to reach our goal of 150 members. Help us support IV.
Please also invite your friends who are not members of IV, to join us. Please have them e-mail me at TeamIV@yahoo.com so that I can e-mail them the Team IV Membership Form.

We would like to advertise an added benefit to joining Team IV.
The day before each of our three selected events we will be hosting a Networking Social Hour for Team IV members to get to know one another specifically for professional networking.
This is a great opportunity for us because from time to time we have to move between jobs and we all know we only have a few weeks time in some cases in order to stay in legal status. This Networking Social Hour can help Team IV members build professional connections for unfortunate situations as well as for furture advancement in our careers!

C'mon IVians, with support from running giants like Runner's World, we should step up to the plate (or the start-line) of at least 1 walking/running event with Team IV!
Lets hear it for Team IV!

Yes Needhelp, just like EB3 to EB2 you can port from 5K to Half or Full Marathon but as Santb1975 said, only if the marathon and full marathon have not reached registration max of 18,000. They estimate this max will be reached by August this year.
I will get the Team IV Membership Form to you this evening!!

This is a link to other races in the DC area: I have never run a race; so I plan on running one of the 5K races in May or June and maybe try one of the 10K races in August. I am sure there are other races abound in summer. If there are others who are apprehensive about running the 10miler (like me).........you might want to try doing something similar.

C'mon San Francisco IVians, the first event of Team IV is in your hometown. NorCal Members we need your support!!!
The first event is the Golden Gate Park Cross Country 5K on August 17, 2008 and until July 15, 2008, your registration for this event is included in your Team IV Membership!!!
The Dolphin South End Running Club has welcomed all Team IV Members to their club event on August 17. DSE Runners is the largest running club in San Francisco and this would be a great opportunity for IVians to come together to show support for IV's long term lobbying efforts and to help support our the fight against Childhood Obesity in the US.

Lets get IV's name out on the national stage by showing our presence at these events. Imagine the impact we will have when they see Team IV walker/runners in Immigration Voice T Shirts at the finish line of all the three walking/running events we have picked and at several other local events as well.

Help can now come from our members. Show your support. "Run for Fun" and in the process:
- Support IV
- Get fit and stay fit. You can walk, you don't have to run, if you don't want to
- Spread awareness about IV among non-immigrants
- Socialize with other like minded people
- Involve your family. Kids like outdoor activity
- Get away from your computer and smell the air
- Train for full Marathon. Represent your state chapter at next IV Olympics
With so much to gain this should be a no brainer.

How many IVians hit the gym and treadmills at least 2 to 3 times week. Imagine, if you could continue to maintain your fitness goals, but at the same time your efforts can raise nominal funds like $300 or $500 for IV, now wouldn't that be something to be proud of?
It takes 45 mins to walk a 5K, your friends and family could possible support you by making donation on your behalf for IV. So it is a win win situation, maintain fitness goals, and raise money for IV.
Can we get the 20th member to sign up today? Remember the 20th member gets $20!!

So this $300/$500 collection target is something to work towards, but once I am in the team, I get to run/walk even if I am unable to raise the full amount, right?
Of Course you can still walk/jog/run with Team IV at a Team IV event.
We encourage you to reach your fundraising goal of $300 or $500, and in the Welcome Package you will get several ideas on how to conduct your fundraising. This is all provided as part of the Targeted Fundraising Plan. $300 and $500 are nominal goals and can be easily reached within one years time. Of course, you will always have my help and Santb1975's help to get you to your fundraising goal.
Lastly, you can also do this in groups to make it easier and more fun. For instance, my non-IV friend who has signed up with Team IV will host a Coffee Hour with me. All guests will buy baked goods from us (coffee is on the house) and the total money raised can be split 2-ways to add to our individual fundraising goals.
santb1975

You are able to walk/ run even if you cannot raise the full amount.
$300 and $500 are targets we set for people to work towards but you can still walk/ run if you cannot raise the full amount. Also, we are suggesting your target amount to be raised over a period of one year and we will be giving out tips for fundraising. The target amounts we set are very nominal and it is fun to raise funds as part of a walking/ running team. I have helped some friends and cousins raise funds for Extrahands, Susan Comen Foundation etc. and it is so much fun and a lot of quality time spent with family, freinds etc. A lot of organizations have mandatory fund raising goals. They set targets like 3500$ to 6000$ and if you cannot raise that amount your credit card will get hit with the balance. However we kept Team IV's fundraising to be voluntary just inline with our organization's goals.
I have already got my Aunt and two of my friends to sign up for Team IV so far. We are going to train together at least once a week and we will organize a fund raising party and contribute all the proceeds to IV.
I am sure you will have lot of fun with this.

Hi Chanduv23,
I really appreciate your support and interest in Team IV.
The basic concept of Team IV is to raise either $300 or $500 in 1 years time starting when you join Team IV and the year ends on January 18, 2009.
There are two Memberships Types to join Team IV; Individual and Family Membership: The Individual Membership costs $50/yr and Family is $75/yr.
Team IV Members will get a T Shirt, Welcome Package with more details and fundraising tips. The premise of the fundraising is that your friends and relatives will support your goal to walk/run one of the three Team IV events in the year and thus will make donations to Immigration Voice (by check) to help you reach your goal of either $300 or $500.
The Three Team IV events we have chosen are:
1. San Francisco Golden Gate Park 5K on August 17, 2008. A 5K is 3.12 miles and can be walked in 45 mins.
2. The Washington DC Army 10 Miler on October 5 2008
3. The Houston Marathon (26.2 miles), or Half Marathon (13.1 miles) or 5K on Jan 18, 2009.
You can do all events, as Santb1975 and myself will, but you are required to do only 1 of these 3. If you have a family membership, we encourage all family members to participate, however, we require only 1 to complete at least 1 event.
If you absolutely cannot make it to one of the above events, you can still join Team IV and participate at local events in your hometown. I can assist you with finding such events. We will try to include your local event in our schedule the following year.
What would really benefit IV is to show our strenght by numbers; meaning if we have several IV members in IV T Shirts walking/running as a group, we are going to get noticed even more, and this is how we can good press for IV.
The goal is to raise money to support IV's long term lobbying efforts and to support a not for profit org that fights childhood obesity in the US. This is in keeping with our fitness goal, and it is a quality of life issue, not only for IV, or for Team IV members, but for the country we have chosen to make our homes in.
Our goal is to have 150 Members and raise at least $45,000!
I hope you can join us. If you have any questions/concerns, please PM me and we can connect by phone to discuss.
Thanks,
NolaIndian

I am sure there are quite a few people who are following this thread; but are in two minds about being able to complete the race. If this happens to be you, then try doing this for starters.
5K = 3.106 miles.
So get into your car, set your odometer and drive exactly 1.55 miles and back. Then walk up there and back and time yourself. Not everyone can run; but even if you have been leading a sedentary lifstyle, you should be able to walk this distance in 45 minutes....even if you are short :)
If you find yourself struggling to walk 3 miles, believe me; you have bigger problems to worry about than a green card!

Texanmom - Another great asset to our Team.

Chanduv - I am assuming you are asking "How do I start with walking/ running?". Here is what it takes to do this
- The first step is Commitment to your Health and Wellness. This can be achieved by putting away 30 - 45 minutes three to four times a week. That could be at lunch, evenings, mornings whatever time is suitable for you.
- The next one is consistency. You do not have to Jump start today by walking/ running 45 minutes, 5 times a week. If you can only do that for 30 minutes twice a week that is fine but you have to be consistent with it. You get addicted to it after a while and increase the time. You also do not have to run marathon's to be healthy and active.
You can start walking and you can set yourself a goal of walking 1 miles or 3.1 miles (5K) by a certain date. There are several races in the Tristate Area that you can choose to paricipate. you can find an event on runnersworld.com or active.com or we (Team IV) can help you find a local event. you can recruit your friends/ family to participate as well. If you can get a few folks in the Tristate chapter to do this as Team IV that will be awesome.
Also please let us know if you need any help/ guidance etc in finding an event and getting started with walking/ running. We will be Glad to help you out in anyway.
Folks, sorry I have not been in much action, with other stuff taking priority, but I would definitely like to know what it takes to do this? I have completely lost fitness due to bad lifestyle, long commutes to work, working spouse, small baby, and other tensions and I like this idea a lot.

I can definitely start off with a short one - until I pick up on fitness :) Tri state members are more than welcome to join me :)

I have been taking several fitness classes in Tristate area and So.Cal over the past 7 years and in every class I have taken so far the number of female participants have always outnumbered the number of male participants. Be it Kickboxing or Strength and Endurance Training. One of my co-worker has started taking Strength Training classes a couple of weeks ago only to tell me that he has new found respect for all the ladies who take those classes religiously every week. I cracked up when he told me ... he was dying to complete the class and kept lowering the weights he picked up while the ladies were going like drill sergeants
I know that females are disproportionately represented in these forums - even so.........I would like to see more women participate. Going forward, I will give $10 towards even female who signs up (upto 10 memberships). If you cannot find company, exercise with a cell phone and pepper spray on you.

I have been swimming and strength training for quite some time now and have started kettle bells and Taek Won Do this year. I do see a lot of women working out. All I am saying is that these forums have a lower proportion of females.......pure statistics.
And yes; there are a lot of females working out and the ones who do take up martial arts are more serious than the guys. However the most common excuse cited by the ones who hesitate to take up running/walking, is security. I am trying to get the ones who are not working out to get out; the ones who are; have a lot of tenacity.
.............BTW, be nice to me. By the time you come to DC to run the race, I might have my brown belt :)

people who have excuses have excuses. We all do.
There might not be lot of ladies on the forums but the ladies we have in IV accomplish a lot and are very dedicated. I will take a highly productive and dedicated team even if it is small. Cheers

I dont know if a pepper spray and a cell phone would help if a Cayote or a Mountain Lion stand in front of someone while walking/running alone..knock on wood...that is not unusaul in So.Cal. The best way to address security concerns is to walk in groups or walk in a slightly busier area.

Nola - Do you have any recommendations for a fuel belt?. I need one of these really soon. I need one which does not bounce while running and has enough space for 20 oz of water, a cell phone, keys and something that is really light.
Girijas, thank you for your efforts to promote Team IV. We really appreciate your support and ideas!!!!:)
All of your ideas are great ones for those who are new to walking/running!!
PS - I run with a cell phone clipped to my shorts or to a fuel belt (when running more than 5 miles). Check out www.fuelbelt.com. You can carry energy gel packs in the pouch on the fuelbelt and also your id and some cash if need be.

Can't let that happen
I am an American, born and raised in the US and I wholly support Team IV. This initiative not only supports IV, but also helps prevent childhood obesity in the US which are two very important issues that we currently face. Being an avid runner, I am always looking for worthy causes to support via running and I am excited to be a part of this Team.

Hi Santb1975,
I have been using the 4 pack fuelbelt for the past 6 years. It has holders for 4 plastic bottles each of which hold 6ozs of fluid. There is a pouch in the front or back in which you can carry 2 or 3 power gel packs (for instant carbs/energy) and you can carry some Tylenol or Aleve if you need it. I clip my cell phone on to the belt itself along my sides or back.
The 4 bottles contain enough fluid for me to run a half marathon. When I did the full marathon, I needed to replenish the bottles around mile 17 or so.
I recommend carrying gatorade in the bottles as opposed to just water. Gatorade helps with electrolyte replenishment.
Of course you can also carry your ID, some cash, house or car key in the pouch. I also purchased a shoe wallet, the clasp of which can be customized with your name, address, the name and cell phone for emergency situations. I usually carry my id, credit card, cash and 1 key in this shoe wallet. It clasps through your show laces with velcro, only about $10 bucks or so.

Team IV Members will get details of fundraising ideas in the Welcome Package once the Membership has been processed.
Here is a glimpse of some of these fun ideas which can be done by Families or Groups of Team IV Members:
1. Pot Luck Dinner - charge guests $10 cover charge (check payable to Immigration Voice). Make this special by picking a specific cusine like Italian or Indian.
2. Coffee Hour - invite your friends over for coffee, while coffee is on the house, sell baked goods by the slice or by the pan.
3. Family Membership - get the kids involved with some arts and crafts activity like customizing plastic Christmas globes/decorations and sell these to friends/co-workers. Everyone wants a customized Christmas tree ornament!
Sound like fun to you, well sign up with Team IV. You get to spend some quality time with friends and family, raise money for IV and by walking/running, lead a healthy lifestyle.

That is right!
You do not have to go out this weekend and test run a 10 mile or 3.12 mile to see if you can do it. If 10 miles is your target, then in training you only have to work up to 7 or 8 miles. On event day, you will have plenty of training under your belt to get you to 10 miles and you will also have race day adrenalin. All of these will help you to walk or run the 10 miles.

you should definately not get a ear/headache . That is not good. We should talk about this. Are you walking at a moderate pace?. Did you start out too fast?. you should always start out slow. you can start at the same pace you walk from your car to your office. That was what I did 7 years ago. See if you can walk for 30 mins at the same pace you normally walk from your car to your office or even try for just 20 mins. Do not worry about speed at this time. We will gradually build you up from walking 20 mins to walking 45 minutes at a Moderate pace. I can work with you personally on this if it is ok with you. I have helped a few people with their health and wellness goals over the past 5 years. That is my favorite hobby actually

Like I said you can start at the same pace as you normally walk from your car to your office. Do that for 20 mins or 30 minutes this week and we will increase the pace very slowly and add a few minutes each day. Also always listen to your body and do what your body can. it is very important to respect our body's limitations. I have learnt that the hard way

It is generally a good idea to be able to maintain a conversation when you jog. The same rule applies to walking. So walk at a pace which allows you to talk to yourself as you walk:)

if you can have a normal conversation = you are not working as much
if you can talk intermittently = you are challenging your body enough
if you cannot talk at all = you are working too much and this does not help either (unfortunately this is the category I fall into a lot of times :D)
For the starters ...walk at your normal pace..remember you are starting to condition your body towards walking 3 miles by a certain time frame. it is ok if you can only get to 1 mile instead of 3. it is going to be a journey.

I have started my fundraising, but that is only because I have all the fundraising ideas in my head.
I will start sending out the Welcome Packages this week. The Welcome Package has a section for Fundraising and will help each Team IV Member reach his/her goal.
The first T Shirt order has also been placed, last week, I believe. I should be receiving this initial order by mail shortly and then I can mail out the T Shirts to those who have signed up thus far.
We need to still concentrate on our recruitment efforts this week and the next.

As far as your concern about being able to do a 5K walk, i can assure you that if you are already able to go for long walks, a 5K will be right up your alley. The 5K is 16 weeks away and with our friends from Runner's World Online, you can actually train to run or walk a 5K within 6 to 8 weeks. So this is completely do-able. A 5K walk is only 45 mins.
When I was a kid in India, some evenings, I could not get a BST Bus to get home from school, so I used to walk from Matunga Circle in Bombay all the way home in Chembur. I was 12 years old and and it took me less than 2 hours. :)
Please PM me your e-mail address or e-mail me at TeamIV@yahoo.com.

Hi Jthomas,
Thanks for your support!!
Please PM me your e-mail address or send me an e-mail to us at TeamIV@yahoo.com so that we can get the Team IV Membership form to you.
If you can walk 12 miles, you can certainly walk the San Francisco 5K and raise money for IV at the same time. And you can also attempt a Half Marathon (13.1 miles), we have one in Houston in January 2009.
Team IV needs dedicated fitness walkers/runners like yourself.
Thanks,
NolaIndian

Thanks for your support Bharat Premi.
Clicking the mouse for 30 mins after 8 spoons of sugar ..wonder what that does ..Let's see. Each spoon of sugar has about 15 calories. 8 spoons = 120 calories. 60 minutes of walking at a moderate pace burns about 120 - 150 calories. Clicking a mouse uses like 3 fingers and some wrist movements..I should stop now..LOL..Just a way to keep this thread on Top.

One of my close friends is considering running the DC 10 miler with me. She never ran or walked a race before. Hopefully she will decide to atleast walk before the end of the day. That will be good for both of us
I partnered with my aunt to walk the SF 5K as well. now I really need to partner with someone who can run the Houston 1/2 marathon with me.

Depending on how my training goes, I should know in 3 months if I am capable of doing the half marathon in 2009. When does the registration end?

We do not have a set date for ending registrations. We are planning on accepting registrations all year long for Team IV. However we recommend people signing up sooner than later. Here is why I say that. The DC and Houston events have a cap on the number of participants and the sooner we sign up the better are our chances of getting a spot to participate in the event. Remember you do not have to run the entire 10 miles or entire half marathon. you can walk, run a few miles, walk the rest etc. I am working towards running the entire 13.1 miles in Houston but I will be happy even if I run half and walk the other half.
The second reason is fund raising. I have a fundraising goal of 5$00 this year ans starting out early will give me a higher probablity of meeting my goal or exceeding it. I am going to be writing letters to my friends/ family to contribute towards IV as early as next week. I will see if I can raise atleast 150 to 200$ by doing that. I am going to organize a summer BBQ and have a cover charge or put a donation box at the BBQ. I will see how much I can raise doing that. My third event will be around November. I was planning on partnering with some friends and baking some pie's, puff pastry's, Cookies, kebobs and selling them at a local farmers maket on a saturday. Hopefully I will raise more than $500 doing all these. This should be a fun filled year for me.

Hi Girijas,
I was advised by the Race Director at Houston that the Marathon and Half Marathon will max out at 18,000 as early as July 2008. So we need to act soon on that. There is no time limit for registration for the Houston 5K.

I want to emphasize on this posting by Santb1975. I know that several IV Members have put in a lot of hard work over several weekends for the past several months working on the letter writing campaign. This initiative, Team IV, is slightly different, and is centered around your personal fitness goals, and having fun. The fundraising goals for each Member are so nominal that about 2-3 events should get you to your targets easily. These events do not require more than 2-3 days of planning and execution combined. In the process, you are going to have some fun as well.
All you need to do now, is sign up with Team IV. You can sustain or start your committment to fitness training and sign up for one of the Team IV or local events. The fundraising can start as late as August and you will have plenty of time to wrap it up by January 18, 2009.
I am confident that several Team IV Members will exceed their initial goals of $300 or $500.
This is a year long, fun filled, fitness oriented way to support IV!!

In times when the temperature drops, try wearing a headband to keep the cool air off of your forehead and also try wearing a hat. I do look like a running geek, i have on hat, sun glasses and headband. But after 10 years of running, i don't care if anyone laughs at me. At least i know I am comfortable!

Great Going needhelp. Dont worry about your speed for now. We will gradually work towards walking more distance and get to 2.5 miles in a few weeks. We can do it.
I did 3.5 miles at lunch. it was 77 degrees outside. so 3 miles of running and 0.5 mile of walking took 36 minutes and a litre of water..had to stay hydrated..Hopefully next time I do it I wont need as many water breaks.

Hey Girijas,
Thanks for your confidence in me, but it is all relative, I think I am a slow, average runner, slower than most of my running friends.
When I started running 10 years ago, my goal on the indoor track was to go around the track 2 times without having to stop and walk. Those 2 rounds made up a small distance of less than a quarter of a mile! So you see, small goals can one day lead you to a 26.2 mile goal as well :)

Team IV has reached a membership of 27 members as of today. I have several more to confirm by this weekend.
That is nearly $9000 in fundraising efforts that we can target! $9000 may not be much, but it can be put to good use for lobbying of new bills, especially the three new bills introduced recently for highly skilled legal immigrants pending GCs.
