Has anyone applied for AP while being outside US?

Has anyone applied for AP while being outside US and used that to enter into US? One step further, has anyone received their GC while outside US and used that to enter into US? I am in a typical situation where I R2i'd this year and I do not have an AP with me. My current employer is asking me to visit US and for me to do that I need to go for a B1 visa which will convert my status from immigrant to Non-immigrant for good. While I have no intention to come back to US in the near future, I am worried, if I ever come to US for living, and apply for GC, I may not even retain my old PD. Guru's any inputs?

I would suggest that you withdraw your I-485 before applying for B-1, as that would show an intent of not immigrating.
