It depends on the kind of greencard.

Asylum / family/ emoloyent based/ religious/ etc are many categories. Check USCIS website to get basic understanding of the process.

You are so naive----most foreign students study here undergraduate and graduate for about 10 years or over and then find employer-sponsored working visa H-1B and then green card. If you are lucky, you can finally get it. If you are unlucky, your employer lay you off within a year after H-1B and then if you can't find another employer, you will need to leave US without any choice. If you want to find someone to get married, it is NOT easy at all. Yesterday I have read some online news talking about a guy as foreign student and then foreign workers in US and then get laid off, stay here in US for about 18 years still cannot get the green card.

So many online news talking about "foreign students with advanced degree" staple green cards or homeowner visa benefit US economy---only talk but without any immigration laws benefited those students. Maybe we need to wait for over 100 years and then the new immigration law will come out.

One of my friends who study medicine in US and he wanted to find internship before taking licensing exam here in US and cannot get one until the last minute of OPT and then he back home without any choice. When he back home, he got stuck in transferring his medicine degree in US to his home country because he has NOT finished his internship and has NOT finished his US medical licensing exam. He feels very frustrated. You know in Canada, all pharmacy and medicine degrees or schools are ONLY admitted to Canadian permanent residents. However, in US, it is NOT and it is very very competitive for foreign students to get into pharmacy or medical schools---so my friend waste his time to study his medicine degree. If US immigration law allow those students to stay, it is better for him and US will NOT waste time to train those talents but NO ONE cares about any immigration law for those science graduates to stay in US.
