Can a J-1 travel outside the US while I-485 application is in process?

My wife and I just got married last month. I am a US citizen, she is Colombian born and has been in the US on a J-1 tourist visa valid until 2013. I understand that visa is now considered canceled due to her marriage to me but we just got a wedding present to fly to Cancun, Mexico for a week long honeymoon. We plan to submit the application to adjust her status this weekend, but can she travel outside the US while the application is in process?
