Equity in Startup on F-1 Visa

I'm on an F-1 Visa studying at a PhD program. Would it be possible for me to hold equity in a startup?

I'm not going to be doing any work on the startup - the equity is for code that I've already written. Also, I don't want to use my OPT for this.
