I have never seen a travel agent offer a price which is lower than what's on the airline website.

Their price is competitive. Better than from any travel websites. Also find less than Ethihad, Emerites and Kuwait Airways websites.
Call and find it. I am not connected with them. But used many times.
Run by Indians.

Couple of years ago i used to buy from ALANITA TRAVEL - FLY WITH US TO INDIA (http://www.alanitatravel.com/) who are based in Boston, MA. I don't know about them right now. These days I go to all kinds of travel websites and try to compare the prices and try out different days and tweak the search to get the best price and buy online.
Last time I booked for my parents thru cheaptickets.com, got a good deal. However, it may not be the same for everybody.
If you are flying from a major city like New York or LA or Chicago etc where you have lot of international Airlines operating directly, you can try the airline website itself. But before that, check the price in websites like, travelocity.com, expedia.com, kayak.com...after finding a good price thru one of these websites or any other that you know, go to the airline website and check the price...usually they would be little less.

Good luck!!!

FYI...I have no affiliation with any of the websites I mentioned.

I think the best thing to do is plan in advance and be flexible to change dates a little as well as airports in vicinity to get a good deal. Example in Washington DC area one can try fares from Dulles International, Baltimore & Reagan airports just to see if there is any deal. After that try to get to priceline, hotwire, Kayak etc to see what they are offering. Then one can go to Sulekha and look at classifieds to find travel agents and perhaps ask for quotes. I think agents can get a better deal than websites (it defies logic in this age of internet but is unfortunately true).

Btw I used to buy tickes from this agent in california his name is Rajiv Mapara. I dont have his contact details but heard he is cheap. Can google him up if needed

I booked ticket a couple of times from India to USA and vice versa thru orbitz. Got best deals compared to travel agencts.
Try to get "India Abroad" news paper from any Indian stores, you'll find hundreds of Indian travel agents advts.

Alanita - Rip off and bad Travel Agent. Never book tickets through Alanita. Recently I have booked my tickets through Alanita Travels and cancelled my trip. Adult 2 tickets, Children 2 tickets. They charge huge cancel or date change charges, even though airlines or Sabre system offers it free of cost or less charge.
In general for cancellation or date change airlines charge max $200. So online portals like makemytrip.com or orbitz.com or <airlines>.com charge extra $50 in addition to airlines cancellation fee. But Alanita travels charge $375 for cancellation or date change.

If you argue with Alanita travel agent regarding these ridiculous charges, they will threaten you like go and get it done with airlines (because they know you have to go through travel agent).

I have chosen Alanita, because they have offered $17 less then makemytrip.com. Beware of this Rip off Travel Agent - Alanita Travels. It is very common for us cancelling tickets or postponement due to immigration, job or health reasons. Consider cancellation or date change charges seriously.

I like world wide travels in detroit.

The best plan to get best price is search all websites on your own. Now call the travel agent ask for match/beat the price.

Many times they do beat.

Orbitz is sometimes very competitive depending upon the travel route (from & to). I did buy tickets to India couple of times, price was cheaper than few agents quote. Worth checking the price at least I think

Alanita - Rip off and bad Travel Agent.

Thanks for the update on that travel agent. As I said in my earlier post, I booked thru them long time ago. These days, the online booking is much cheaper then going thru a travel agent. Also, the travel agency is a dying industry. Its would all be gone in a couple of years.

Check the price in online sites like MakeMytrip and Yatra and then to airline site. In most cases you will find a cheaper deal on airline site.

Use Orbitz. YOu can find the airline which offers best fare than buy from orbitz or buy from airline website. Kayak.com gives you best fare available searching a wide no of airlines. Booking india ticket via travel agent using phone is so history and inconvenient go online.

I did agree with 'tickets with travel agents is history'.
This statement is only valid for domestic travel only.
I did checked all available websites and airline sites for 2 tickets for my inlaws last month.
Finally before purchasing, I did call the travel agent which I did mentioned in the previous post.
To my surprise they quoted $25 less than all prices. So I did gain $50 for two tickets.
Also if want to change date or cancel, easy to deal with the agent than the website.
