View Full Version : Obama official on immigration reform bill

Interesting that somebody in obama's working ring (apart from the senators) has openly commented on the immigration reform bill.
Obama Official: Immigration Reform Will Be Introduced Once Votes to Pass It Are Assured « Feet In 2 Worlds, Immigration News (http://feetin2worlds.wordpress.com/2009/10/29/obama-official-immigration-reform-will-be-introduced-once-votes-to-pass-it-are-assured/)
But given the caveat one does not know what will be there for legal immigs (EB categories) who are left in limbo. Maybe we still will be continuing to float in the storm water drain hoping to find some place of rest.
Maybe this is an old thread. If this thread interests somebody please give green as I am bored with being on Red. :p

But there might be a slight possibility of obama upping the bills for health care and immigration reform given the losses in the governor elections.
There might be a indirect relationship that might push whitehouse in addressing these critical bills but one would have to wait on how the first bill goes through.
Any hits on the healthcare will still push immig reform back as obama and co will try to fight out in passing healthcare first and use the success wave to extend terms.
Sincerely I feel obama has a lot more to offer towards what he had promised but there are political threads that are tying his hands together perhaps...
These are just my views.

Bringing the immigration debate on the floor is going to be a extremely challenging affair for Obama.
Believe me folks, healthcare will go through and so will other bills .. but immigration is going to be challenging.
When we talk about immigration - it is all about illegal immigration - so the entire immigration thing revolves around illegal immigration.
Even if immigration is debated - we are not sure how much we have in it.
Unfortunately our community does not want to collectively help ourselves - instead wait for some reform where we are not sure if there is something in it for us.

I agree with your views and gave you green too.
Yes, but for political compulsions he wshould be looking for an opportunity to restore his popularity and vote bank

Immigration bill will never come. Even it comes, democrats will never get enough votes to pass, especially when unemployment rate is so high. Politicians are same everywhere.

All depends on how Obama puts outs the cards for the health care as he is yet to open up his shoulders on bills.
Once we see the fate of the first bill, one can judge his strength amongst fellow people in the government for him to support.
Maybe we should wait until the healthcare bill lifts its head..
Thanks to all those who have brought me back to green.
Oh red sucks man....... Felt like being alienated just because of reds being in my profile :p

Even economy was good in year 2005, 2006, and 2007. They did not able to pass a small peacemeal bill of immigration. I don't think so they would able to pass CIR ever. It is very complicated, only miracle could happen then it will pass. EB3-I and ROW EB3 are in very bad shape. I don't know what would be future of EB3.

From my views - It will be a dicey time ahead for EB categories.
No hope for piece meal legislations
No hope for immig reform to start until battle for healthcare reform ends -- Not sure too if we (legal line waiters will have some support in the bill)
Positive hopes can be rested with economy picking up quicker that will create a demand where we will be helped by some golden angel's hands

But let us not lose hopes that miracles do happen...
It could be another repeat blooper (2007) from USCIS to collect more revenues that will create a window for us and flood them with our apps. This again will be a clogger in the drain.
Who knows what runs in the officials who orchestrate these number games in top level ? They know it adds to our woes but we can only try for self-pity.
I agree immigration bill will be around illegal immigration, but to pass they have to ensure legal immigrations are take care off. They are facing uphill battle getting over health bill. Therefore, they will be very careful before they put this out.
I do not think they have an option not to get this bill. If it fails they can blame republicans.

Actually legal immigration reform is the bait to get support for illegal legalization.
VA and NJ races were lost due to loss of independent votes.
Liberal and Conservative voters will always vote Democratic party and Republican party respectively. The old saying "they have nowhere else to go" still holds. Bush tried it a lot. By pitching CIR in 2004 Bush (or should I say Karl Rove) knew that right-wing had no choice but to vote for Bush. Instead he will also get Hispanic votes. But Congress which runs on local issues balked at the move and instead passed RealID act.
In other words if republican party passes CIR somehow (through intimidation of some wavering members by seniors in the party), then they
win it all...Conservative, Right wing who have no choice but vote for Republican . Plus Hispanic votes as well.
But for democratic party the equation is different...in fact opposite...Liberal and Hispanic votes are locked in (where will they go ...to the party of Tom Tancredos ?)...they need to do some anti-illegal bill like Everify etc to get some centerist (independent) voters.
It is the independent voters for whom both parties fight for. CIR will create huge swings
among independent voters will cost a lot for democratic party in 2010. It would be suicidal to pass CIR.

Its true in the essence that they have nowhere to go except for these 2. But if CIR passes through then democratic party will have an upper hand due to their vote bank that might be have extra number favoring from latino community. Healthcare is at cat on the wall stage for now. We have to wait for its jump up or fall down to judge on the next moves for CIR.

On a second thought...actually tabling CIR in 2010 (though it will fail)...will help us indirectly....it will throw out the Democratic party in 2010...and when republican party gets into power then the Hispanic caucus will get less powerful and piecemeal will be more possible.

People who voted for Obama on the grounds of CIR( Hispanics), Do not hesitate to vote against Obama/Democrats if NOTHING is done for them.
It'll more be a anti-incumbency rather than the Pro-Republican, as far as Hispanics are concerned.
IMHO, Obama will atleast try(show) to do everything to get CIR to the floor and push( in public view) as hard as possible.

You are right Leo07....Obama is already doing that....one hand he talks of CIR...other hand he is going gangbusters with no match SSN letter against employers who hire illegals.
That way he is also pressuring American Chamber of Commer to go and pressure GOP for CIR. Plus he gets to show the independents that he is doing something about illegal and
H1B ( by flood of RFE and rejects etc ).
But..."People who voted for Obama on the grounds of CIR( Hispanics), Do not hesitate to vote against Obama/Democrats if NOTHING is done for them."
Where will they go to ? to GOP ?
On the whole hispanic vote is also divided 2nd generation, 3rd generation and 1st generation. CIR impacts teh 1st generation only. Also they have poor track record of not going for voting.

AMA, AARP back House health care bill - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/11/05/health.care/index.html)
this is getting interesting. Maybe a tilt towards bill getting more votes in "for" than "against" as this article suggests that AARP is one of the most influential doctors advocacy group.

This is indeed interesting....I just cant wait to see the outcome....especially the
Senate which can filibuster (which is bought off by insurance industry)
If this passes it will bea home run for Democratic Party and Obama...
Right now they are lower in polls due to "paid for" fearmongering...all that will stop after that...and their polls will increase as people wont see the "doom gloom fearmonger story".

Hope Congress can get its act together and pass Healthcare reform soon, so they can move on to Immigration reform...but then it's just wishful thinking on my part!
If CIR going to happen, it will happen before Arpil 2010. Else it's dead for next .... years.

Chances are that CIR will have nothing (next to nothing) in it, for EB.
I know everybody is going to get thier knickers in a bunch due to what I am posting but the only way to clear this current back log and to avoid future ones are:
(1) Re-capture
(2) Restrict annual Worldwide EB based applications to HALF the amount of H, K, L, O or ther such visas issued.
#1 is WAY less controversial than other "liftng per country caps", 'STEM Exemption" stuff. Recapture is just bringing back, what should have been given out anyways, but was not.
Even likes of Lou Dobbs, Steve Hamm and Moira Herbst will find it hard to argue against #2

Some more updates on healthcare bill vote on saturday.
"Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Friday that House leaders "could use additional time, if needed," to approve its health care bill, Politico reports.
"Unless there are delaying tactics or something I don't foresee, I think we can finish the bill by 7, 8 o'clock tomorrow night," Hoyer reportedly said on a conference call. He said that Republican delay tactics or insufficient Democratic support could stall the vote until Sunday, or possibly Monday or Tuesday.
Hoyer acknowledged his party has not yet secured the 218 votes needed to pass the bill, according to the Associated Press. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has in recent days expressed more confidence in the vote. Last month she said she "definitely" had 218 votes. On Thursday, the speaker said "We will," when asked if she had the votes. "

krish2005...very true. Surprised to see it cross even the first( lower) hurdle.
The main hurdle will be in senate which is less focused on local district level issues.
They are career politicians and Senate is the area where insurance companies hold significant influence and are pouring money there.

Agreed. Looks like in senate it will face heavy flak as even some independents (ex. Senator Joe Lieberman) who support democrats are against this bill given some of its sensitive clauses (if it contains).
Lady luck has already smiled on it in first showdown... which was a real surprise.
