Question Permanent resident card expired

My husband´s permanent resident card expired living abroad (we live in his home town in Europe):confused and we are planning on going to the states to visit family. He holds a passport that participates in the visa waiver program so he was able to get the ESTA approval for entry. He has no desire to renew and is planning on abdicating his card. Should he do this before or after the trip? I am a US citizen so I am apprehensive on showing up in the states and having problem on his entry. Please advise!!!

From the sounding, your husband has already abandoned his permanent resident status. Just show up at the immigration counter, return the green card and hand over a filled out I-94W (green one).
