Default H1b renwal and Candian Green Card

Dear Sir / Madam

I recently obtained a visa to enter Canada and get my Canadian green card validated / activated. As part of this process I need to enter Canada between now and April 28, 2010 to apply for the Canada PR card and Social Insurance Number (SIN). The Canadian PR card and SIN card will be forwarded to the Canadian address I specify in 3 weeks time. I am not required to physically remain in Canada during this process i.e. I can make a land based entry into Canada apply for the PR and SIN cards with my friend's Canadian address and return back to the USA in the same day).

In the meanwhile I have to renew my H1b before it expires on March 30th 2010.

I wish to ask you when is the most opportune time to make the trip to apply for the Canadian PR card:
Case 1: Do it before my H1b renewal is okayed (e.g. during thanks giving long weekend) ...
BUT will the immigration officer question me as to why I need a H1b renewal as i already have a Canadian green card which allows me to work in Canada.
Why I still prefer this case 1 ...
My wife has to leave to India to deal with some urgent issues for the next 6 months beginning Jan 2010 and doing the Canadian green card validation during the thanks giving long weekend make it convenient for the both of us.

Case 2: Do it after March 30th 2010 ... I should know a result as to whether my H1b is extended by this time and there is really no issue with applying for the canadian green card at this time ...

Why I still wish to do case 1

I don't know why they would ask you about your Canadian visa while renewing your H1b. They are completely separate. In fact, I was never interviewed at all when I did mine. If they did ask, well the H1b is a temporary visa so I assume they expect you to go somewhere when you are finished working in the US. Now if you were applying for a US green card, that might be different.

Dear Maximus

Just to clarify did you get your h1b renewed during the time when there were significant layoffs and the US economy was under recession?
