Interpretation of Indian VISA

My wife received Indian VISA that is valid up to April 16. Does anyone know what is the interpretation of the date? Is it the entry date (i.e., she needs to enter India before Aoril 16, but the stay in India will be determined at the time of entry -- i.e., U.S. style interpretation), or is it the exit date (i.e., she needs to leave India before that date -- duration of stay -- Europe style interpretation)?
