When economy is recession and slowly drifting towards depression and unemployment is on the way of 10% if any article tells US needs more foreigners these articles will lose value and those who are writing will lose crediblity. This is the reason Bill Gates kept quiet after years of lobbying for more gc and H1b. After 5k layoff if Bill Gates again lobbies for more H1b then he is going to lose crediblity.

I agree with Senthil1 and Mirage. We need to always make sure we strive to become better at what we do and really make a difference in this economy. For those in IT, they know in their heart that it is not rocket science. Plus, the terrible mess that fraudulent H1Bs and L1Bs have caused is more than we can handle right now.

Also read Dr. Norm Matloff's rebuttal to Vivek Wadhwa's article.

http://seeker.dice.com/olc/thread.js...13370&tstart=0

I am not condoning any of the racist comments left on the threads posted in the link above. But read the post which talks about Norm Matloff's dismissing the article by Vivek Wadhwa.

Default It sure is rocket science

Software development IS rocket science. You may be feeling programming is pretty simple and can be done by anybody. That is because your brain is now capable of doing many things with out you even realizing it.

I would say IT may not be a rocket science, but it is above and beyond other professions.

Below are my points to defend .

- No company will invest in IT unless there is a decent ROI that are usually driven by Business Case.So inorder to acheive that, you need diversified skilled people.Be it PM, BA, QA, Architect or Developer and one cannot say QA is somewhat less skilled profession, as it depends on the complexity/criticality of the project you might be working on.

- It is not a profession, where you keep doing the samething always. Example a CPA or an accountant or an Attorney need not have critical thinking capability to do their jobs. Its a routine job. But IT demands you have flexible and innovative thinking.

- Agree that there are so many tools available to make IT Job easier, but not every tool can support all of the requirements that Business expects in the Product.

Hope this clarifies some of the issues.

Good point.
Maybe we IT folks are under-estimating ourselves.

As the saying goes, an elephant doesn't know how big it is !

Default Reality Check

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree with those who think IT is rocket science. Yes, certain aspects, where innovations and patents happen a lot, might be comparable to rocket science but I don't believe most of us would qualify to be there in the first place. Remember, most of us are EB3.

Also, if it truly were rocket science, then wouldn't the requirement for eligibility be PHD or at least a Master's? Why does H1B have a separate 20K visa quota for Master's degree holders? Do you think the ones who arrive on the 65K quota are involved in rocket science? Not to sound arrogant, but everyone knows the quality of many people who arrive here on H1B. One of the things I would love to see added as a requirement to an H1B/L1B petition is something like a TOEFL combined with GRE/GMAT exam. This will at least filter out those who can't speak English properly and don't have the required skills. I am tired of getting categorized with those who I can hardly understand, let alone Americans. I would be willing to appear for it if required for an EB GC as well. For those who are confident in their abilities, it shouldn't be an issue at all.

Anyway, I think you may have missed the gist of my original post. It wasn't to start an argument on whether IT is rocket science or not. It was to say that we need to find avenues to make ourselves better and almost indispensable to this economy. I am working on getting a Master's degree very soon and hope it will help me get ahead in life, wherever I am. I am just sharing constructive thoughts here and not trying to be grandstanding and condescending.

Good luck to everyone on the forum.
