Default What is the the right way to correct our immigration system?

Senators Charles E. Schumer and Lindsey O. Graham may have the answer. In a great article published by the Washington Post, they outline their idea and hope to work closely with President Obama to get it done.
The answer is simple: Americans overwhelmingly oppose illegal immigration and support legal immigration. Throughout our history, immigrants have contributed to making this country more vibrant and economically dynamic. Once it is clear that in 20 years our nation will not again confront the specter of another 11 million people coming here illegally, Americans will embrace more welcoming immigration policies. Our plan has four pillars: requiring biometric Social Security cards to ensure that illegal workers cannot get jobs; fulfilling and strengthening our commitments on border security and interior enforcement; creating a process for admitting temporary workers; and implementing a tough but fair path to legalization for those already here.

Besides border security, ending illegal immigration will also require an effective employment verification system that holds employers accountable for hiring illegal workers. A tamper-proof ID system would dramatically decrease illegal immigration, experts have said, and would reduce the government revenue lost when employers and workers here illegally fail to pay taxes.

We would require all U.S. citizens and legal immigrants who want jobs to obtain a high-tech, fraud-proof Social Security card. Each card's unique biometric identifier would be stored only on the card; no government database would house everyone's information. The cards would not contain any private information, medical information or tracking devices. The card would be a high-tech version of the Social Security card that citizens already have.

Prospective employers would be responsible for swiping the cards through a machine to confirm a person's identity and immigration status. Employers who refused to swipe the card or who otherwise knowingly hired unauthorized workers would face stiff fines and, for repeat offenses, prison sentences.

We propose a zero-tolerance policy for gang members, smugglers, terrorists and those who commit other felonies after coming here illegally. We would bolster recent efforts to secure our borders by increasing the Border Patrol's staffing and funding for infrastructure and technology. More personnel would be deployed to the border immediately to fill gaps in apprehension capabilities.

Other steps include expanding domestic enforcement to better apprehend and deport those who commit crimes and completing an entry-exit system that tracks people who enter the United States on legal visas and reports those who overstay their visas to law enforcement databases.

Pardon me for being so narrow minded but any reform that doesn't give relief to the retrogressed applicants is simply INHUMANE, INCOMPLETE and against human rights (leads to more and more exploitation suffering, agony and stagnation of both life , career, financial loss and what not.....of these retrogessed applicants)....
Not only this all those who suffered throught retrogession should be given relief in citizenship by taking away the time spent in retrogession from the backlogged years especially the unwarranted "Backlog Elimination Center Drama"....I don't simply understand what did it finally achieve we are still in the same boat as were are when it was introduced (in the name of PERM)....Labor is still taking 9 months to 1.5 years now..so what happened to faster Labor approvals....is there going to be another "Backlog Elimination Great Drama" now?

They may eventually give Citizenship to "illegals". Legals will be in the same dark room as we have been. Thats the situ we are in. There is no respite, though they say its "Comprehensive" immigration reform. Whats your take?

For them tough menace, $500 fine (that will forgive their all crimes like, entering illegally/over stayed, preparing fake SS Card/driving license, working illegally without tax. Learn English language. Is it tough !!!!!!!

Legals have already paid more than $10,000, Never broke law, good in English but still on hostages with pro amnesty politicians to pass illegal amnesty !!

Nothing is fair but millions of votes are fair!!
You are 100% correct. This is what we call democracy. Creating niche for votes. There are very big Indian associations in USA. Few of them are so powerful that they have access even to the presidents office. If we go get some support from those American citizens of Indian origin it will be really helpful. I know these people are crooked but we are the one in need.

Before we start contatcing them please make sure what we need...
Two simple things
1) Elimination of All backlog immediately. Everyone retrogessed to get gc on day one. None of the new guys illegals to get GC unless all legals pending as of then(EB and FB), have got thier GCs no matter which country quota crap or FB to EB and vice versa bullshit.
2) Citizenship relief for retrogessed.
3) In future if there are not VISA numbers lost, if so they need to be used to next country. and more clear definition of EB-FB , FB-EB w.r.t country quota.

We have Gujarat associations, Rajasthan association, Tamil Associations, Telugu associations. Many of these are very rich and established business men. Just to prove their supremacy and achievements these guys donate huge sums to different foundations(all foundations are ran by some US politicians). Some how if we could convince these guys and praise them for their achievements then our problems could be easily heard.

What do you guys think?

I hate to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but these so-called "powerful Indian Americans" are quite self-serving. Getting our EB woes resolved, does really nothing for them, other than increasing competition for them and their offspring. I have actually seen a few Indian-Americans US citizens and LPR's actually complain about fresh H1B/EB's coming from India indulging in "desigiri" and causing the quality of life for them to drop.

(Unfortunately, this is a side effect of Indian's clanish mentality where they don't really care, unless the fellow Indian is a "gujju", punjabi or some other clan that they're originally from. Of course there are a few exceptions ...)

In order to get this EB row resolved, we have to make sure that the actual people who can make a difference (i.e. educated and enlightened Americans who are in turn able to influence other Americans) side with us.

To do that, volunteer in your community and become an example of "why the local population" would want you there. Once you get enough people talking, the local rep/senator will sit up and listen to his constituents and that will set the ball rolling to get the spotlight on EB reform. No doubt it is easier said than done, but I am sure a few of us are practicing it.

Good luck !
