Default Are we screwed - Waning Hope for EB Immigration during Lame Duck Session

12/05/2006: Waning Hope for Any Relief for Employment-Based Immigration Legislation During Lame Duck Session

Employment-based immigrants have been hoping that the SKIL Act be enacted in the form of a rider to the pending Appropriation Bills. However, report indicates that there are allegedly thousands of such "earmarks" attempting to be enacted as a legislation in the form of a rider to the Appropriation bills. People may recall that the Senate refused to pass the Appropriation bills before they got into the Thanksgiving break exactly on the same grounds. There is a prediction that the Lame Duck Congress may not be able to pass any additional Appropriation bills for the stratetic reasons as well as practical reasons. So far, the Lame Duck Congress has failed to move on any key or top priority legislations and is labelled as "Lazy Duck," when it comes to the key legislations. Reportedly Democrats are scheduled to go into a closed-door meetings but information indicates that it is intended for the new Congress strategies rather than the Lame Duck Congress strategies. Another sad story of S. 1932!

This is not unexpected. Everyone knew that getting EB relief in the lame duck session was a long shot but there was no harm in trying. AILA tried and failed. There is nothing to be disheartened. Had the Congress just passed the law to increase H1B's then that would have been a major cause of concern.

Having said that the end of Jan would be a very interesting time. Immigration is not Dems agenda for the first 100 hours which I'm guessing would be over by Jan end. I would be very eager to know what agenda they have moving forward from there.

I set myself a deadline of March 2007 for any reform to be passed so I can atleast decide to go Home for good, folks do you think SKIL will get passed before that ?

hang on.... I am looking for my magic 8 ball.

Honestly no one knows for sure. With the new congress with democrats in power, the chances have certainly increased that something may happen in 2007. However, it's next to impossible to predict any timeframe with any more precision than that.

Keep the bags packed but at the same time keep your ticket an open one

Sorry dude/dudette, dont mean to make fun of you but the only thing that we are ALL sure about is, that NO one knows if and when any kind of relief will come. Forget when the SKIL bill will be passed, right now we dont even know when it will be tabled or IF it will be tabled AT ALL.

A personal opinion: I feel, it is HIGHLY unlikely that Skil bill will be passed by March 2007. But that is MY opinion.

After July 2007, there is no way the Dems can avoid a discussion on immigration. This is according to my sources.

That may be but even if the discussion starts in July, it may very well take rest of the year to get through congress if it ever does. We have seen this bill sink once and there is no gurantee that it'll make it next time around.

But I certainly hope that something is done sooner than later. If it happens before July, that's even better. We then will just get less time to organize our big celebration party.

Something was supposed to happen in Dec 2005. Then again in the fall of 2006. Now we push it to 2007.

Where is the end to all this?

Default End of lame duck session

Looks like it. As per cnn the congress should end the lame duck session by Thursday.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/12/....ap/index.html

But Republicans about to lose their thrones are doing nothing not sanctioned by Bush before the 109th Congress shuts down after a final, four-day work week. On Wednesday, the administration released a statement saying the president strongly supports the fetal pain bill, which would require women at 20 weeks of pregnancy and beyond to be informed that an abortion would cause the fetus pain.

Default EB fate

Someone say March 07 someone say must be before mid of the next year.
If you look at the last two years, even with presidents National TV speech,
congress did not move.

Media will just make us happy, lot of journalists say that if Bush could not get any of his legislation passed then it would be bad for Republicans in the 08 elections.
Anywayz it is going to be bad due to the war. No affect on the congress from business comunity. We have seen the affect this year.

I have been saying and still think that Immigration is not a major issue to the congress(Democratic or Repub) because the american people do not bother which party does good to the illegals, they care about the medicare, SocialSecurity, Wages , gas prices and lot more and (Why not because this is what they need.)

Not being pessimistic, look from a border prospective

So I pray and hope some relief comes soon.

I guess the congress will work until Friday as Monday (12/4) is not counted as part of the 4 - day week.

It does seem like a sliding scale What I have heard is that BY 07/07, the CIR issue will be discussed for sure in both houses. Let's see what happens.
