Default wht is true story?

i am sorry..i couldnt follow todays proceedings..whn i cam to iv site in the evening..everyone says bill is dead
whn i went to immigration-law.com, they say the following

cud someone tell me which one is true??????????

We reported earlier the Senate Republican Members Agreement last night. Today, the Democratic Minority Leader and other Democractic leaders agreed to the proposal, turning the Republican agreement into the Bi-Partisan Agreement. This dramatic break-through opens a door to the possibility of passing the Senate version of Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill, S. 2454, as amended before this week is over and before the Congress goes into the recess next two weeks.
The development is accompanied by three other developments:
President released statement supporting the bi-partisan agreement;
Senate rejected the Democrat's motion to cloture for the Specter amendments to S.2454;
Senate also relected the Republican Kyl' motion for his amendments.
Now we see the light at the end of the tunnel!!

If you go toImmigration-law update time clearly says 3PM EST and IV postings are around 9.30PM EST ...so what have to be correct? the one which is posted at 3PM or 9.30 PM. You decide. Before asking same question in different place do some homework.

Default That's old news by 12 hours.

There is no serious effort by the republicans. They are fractured, divided, into groups. They have no motivation to get this comprehensive bill passed. I have been observing the tactics and attitudes of these republican senators and democratic senators. I am more shocked by the game of one-upmanship on the part of Frist, Kyl, Cornyn, Craig. I don't see rhyme or reason in their sppeches. The bill has no life for the next 3 weeks.

Default Posturing

All this is a lot of posturing. I think they will get a bill out of senate. Dems. want as few modifications as possible, Reps. want to weaken its pro immigrant provisions as much as possible. It is surprising to me that even with a minority 45 in the senate they are weilding more power as they are more united 40 or so solidly behind kennedy, compared to Reps. who are divided and so weakened. The bill is hence being shaped more to the pro immigrant Dems.
I doubt the Reps. will kill it on the senate floor, they will atleast wait until house/senate conference to do that.
Will be interesting tomorrow. Lets Pray as Cardinal Mahoney suggested.

Well said. This whole thing is stalling simply because of Frist's presidential ambitions and Kyl's relection bid. Frist wants to distance himself from Bush and McCain - both guys supporting guest worker programs and legalization of the undocumented workers. He wants to show he is "strong on security" by pushing through a border security only bill. He is using Kyl and others to torpedo the SJC bill either on the senate floor or in the conference. Bush is too powerless to intervene.

We are probably screwed unless Frist agrees to send a moderate group - like the SJC - to the conference instead of Kyl, Cornyn, Sessions or people like that.

Default Two Issues caused the evening meltdown

In the evening, problems: a meltdown over process.
Two issues:
1. Democrats want to limit the number of amendments that can be debated on the deal. GOP opponents to the bipartisan deal have a slew of amendments they want to offer.

Durbin said an anticipated large number of amendments would be the equivalent of a filibuster.

Republicans, including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who helped broker the bi-partisan immigration provisions, said this is an unfair demand from Democrats.

2. Democrats want Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Az.) to agree in advance who he will pick to be on an immigration bill House-Senate conference committee.

If the Senate passes an immigration bill, it will be vastly different from the measure the House passed on Dec. 16. The two versions would have to be reconciled if a bill is to get to the president to sign. A bill can be virtually rewritten at this stage.

``We are concerned whether or not this Congress will have the strength to go up against Jim Sensenbrenner,’’ said Durbin.

That's the whole point. There are a lot of moderate republicans who would vote with the dems in the senate on the legalization provisions. If they can get 60+ votes, that would send a strong signal to the house - they would then negotiate away from the Sensenbrenner position. On the other hand, if Kyl and Sessions and Cornyn are all allowed to chip away at the senate bill and weaken the vote in the senate then the final bill will probably end up much closer to the Sensenbrenner version. When Reid says the WH should intervene, he is probably not baiting, just seeking help.

that's the official title of the bill, nothing wrong with it.
they still have a cloture motion vote tomorrow morning, so we'll see.

Yes, sure, I'm not going to give up until it will be clear. By the way, they will have almost a night to make some agreements (sure, they don't want to be "last mile" in this bill, both of them). Hope they will bring out something new tomorrow morning
