So if I were you - I would take the money, put it in an investment vehicle and leave it there for a few years and then give the proceeds to my kids as they start getting ready to go to college.
The goverment is giving you money to spend *now* when consumer spending is low.

Saving it for the future (or sending it to India), defeats the whole purpose of a refund.

This is nothing but carrots for Voters, as in every other democracies you can see parties promising free food, color televisions, free power etc. They are a step ahead they are giving cash, so not giving to ITIN holders does make sense, I'm surprized they didn't make it 'Just for Citizens'

Default From WSJ

I am sure this has been discussed umpteen times before...but nevertheless...

Here is the Q&A from the wall street Journal

Quote:
Q: Suppose I'm married but only one of us has a valid Social Security number. Can we get the payment anyway?

A: If only one has a valid Social Security number, neither can receive the payment on a joint return, the IRS says. If the spouse with a Social Security number files a separate return, he or she may qualify for a stimulus payment, based on income and other items reported on that return.

When the economy was sliding in 2000-2001, Bush gave a refund in 2001 which was after elections.

If you earn more than 75k you still would get it. only you won't get 1200 but bit less. It gradually phases out as you earn more than 75k.

Good luck

Default Conflicting info online

It is common information that to receive the rebate you have to file the 2007 tax return before Apr 15 but when I check my rebate status it is reported that I should have filed for my taxes at least 6 weeks back to qualify. I filed my taxes only about 4 weeks back.

According to the last 2 numbers in my SSN I am supposed to receive the rebate no later than 2nd of May as I have paid the tax liability through my checking account.

I am confused.

For the record my wife and my son have SSNs assigned to them.

In some cases when cases are rejected (like H1B not selected in lottery), USCIS does refund back your money....
(Keyword is refund, not giving like charity; IRS is 'refunding' part of your taxes).

Question Nothing for the child?

Dear All,

We received $1,200 for self and the spouse, did not get $300 for the child. Even if the child did not have a SSN in 2007 but was a dependant on the tax returns filed?

Any one else with similar situation?

Hey Vsach,
If you don't mind could you please tell me when did you file you tax return? If you look at my previous post I am getting some conflicting information from the IRS website.

Default Tax filing

Hi,

We filed in February,2008.

Just read on the IRS website, anyone without a SSN number is not eligible, our son did not have one in 2007.
