Author: xszhu http://web.wenxuecity.com/BBSView.ph...n&MsgID=251645 I have a dream. (Under the inspiration of the spirit of Martin Luther King, I wrote the poem.) I have a dream. I dreamed that after 8 years of hardworking and legal staying in this country I got my green card approved. I dreamed that whenever a recruiter called me and asked my working status, I could tell him that I don't need a visa sponsorship. I dreamed that I should have known I need 8+ years to get my green card, I should have known it 8 years ago, when I was still young, when I was able to move freely to another country without worrying about the family root nowadays. I have a dream. I dreamed I could work like other American workers, not like a slave. I dreamed I could leave my employer when I have a better opportunity instead of for 8 years' worrying that my employer can suspend or delay my green card application. I dreamed I could be promoted instead of working on the same position and salary for 8 years just for that green card. I dreamed that I don't have to worry everyday in 8 years that if I'm unemployed, I have to leave this country and kiss my green card application goodbye. I have a dream. I dreamed there are never such cruel things called Backlog Elimination Center. I dreamed Ms. Elaine Zhao as a daughter of an Immigrant family knew how hard it is to work and live legally in this country without a green card. I dreamed some people working in DOL could appreciate other people's life because 8 years for a family is definitely an important portion of whole life. I dreamed that 8 years of hard working can convince DOL that there is no other American worker can fit the job I am working on, hence they will issue me a labor certificate as the first step in my green card application. I have a dream. I dreamed that legal employment based immigrants don't have to stick to the same job position and same company for 8 years before they can get their green card. I have a dream. I dreamed that I could have the courage of Martin Luther King to speak out our issues and let everybody in this country know the issues. I dreamed that the people of this country could feel our pain and respect our hard working and services for this country for so many years. |

I believe IV core team is our Dr. King. If anyone, they will be the one who will bring relief to legal immigrants. They, however, will need all the support members can give and let's hope that all members are in fact doing just that.

Here is my suggestion:
1. Contribute and make others contribute. 2. There is an add a member campaign: bring at least one new member. 3. Participate in your state chapter. 4. Write lawmakers in your state about issues faced by legal immigration. 5. Talk to core members if they need your help in any other way. Quote:

Ok, Thanks. I have scheduled a check payment for next week. 1. I am from Florida, I just see only one thread for FL state chapter, what does that mean, I just posted saying I am from so on so place but what is next? 2. I will be shortly sending emails to my contacts in FL to become a member. 3. Is there templates available in this portal so that we could send emails to lawmakers? |

Just browse through the "Action Alerts" on the homepage and you'll see bunch of action items for members. Some have expired and some are just on going. Core team normally posts action items for members there so just keep an eye on it.

Per my subjective calculation, the economic value I am losing by being tied up to my current employer is probably $50,000 per year. It is my fifth year and still the end is remote. So it adds up already $250,000. I think there are many people out there getting GC unlawful way with a fraction of this money through fake marriage or religious visa. The irony lies in that the process for some unlawful people is on the faster track than us. The government is trying to catch these people but probably it is only able to catch a fraction of these people. It is sad the system works better towards ill willed people and sad for this great country we all try so hard to live in. I understand the xenophobia and anti immigration sentiment of Republican party but it will have to consider from economics point of view. If they merely shut down the end of the valve, the pressure of the hose will burst in many places along the way and the social cost caused by the people who don't want to live by the rules. It is very basic economics when supply and demand curve is regulated, black market mushrooms.
We IV members with high integrity and morality will still stick to the rules and laws because our integrity is priceless and cannot be measured in dollar amount. I am very appreciative of my current respectful employer for having hired me and supporting me but I have no bargaining power over my salary no matter how hard and how much I work as the management clearly know that I don't have an option to leave and I am stuck here. By accepting more immigrants, US will become more like a relative to the world rather than single power house that many country have to fear. The more internationalized U.S. is better for the world peace. I think probably the most fundemental problem can be fixed by changing employer based system than just pleading to let us pass this hurdle before we turn grand father or grand mother. |

off-topic:
macaca, u nearly made it as word of the year. too bad u got plutoed. http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/01/07/wor...ear/index.html CNN) -- Pluto may no longer be a planet, but it has a new claim to fame: "Plutoed" has been chosen 2006 Word of the Year by the American Dialect Society. The society defined "to pluto" as "to demote or devalue someone or something, as happened to the former planet Pluto when the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union decided Pluto no longer met its definition of a planet." The former planet had some tough competition in the voting, which took place Friday at the ADS' annual meeting, held in Anaheim, California. "Plutoed" won in a runoff against "climate canary," defined as "an organism or species whose poor health or declining numbers hint at a larger environmental catastrophe on the horizon." The runner-up was "macaca" or "macaca moment," defined as "treating an American citizen as an alien" -- a reference to a campaign remark by former Virginia Sen. George Allen that some say marked the beginning of the end for his re-election hopes. Also in the running for Word of the Year were YouTube; surge (referring to a large, but brief, increase in troop strength); and flog ("a fake blog created by a corporation to promote a product or a television show"). Like any good awards show, the ADS meeting had multiple categories. In the "Most Unnecessary" category, "SuriKat" (the supposed nickname of the baby girl of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes) beat out "the decider," President Bush's description in April of his position in relation to whether Donald Rumsfeld kept his job as secretary of defense. The "Most Outrageous" award went to "Cambodian accessory," defined as "Angelina Jolie's adopted child who is Cambodian." In the "Most Euphemistic" category, the winner was "waterboarding," defined as "an interrogation technique in which the subject is immobilized and doused with water to simulate drowning." The ADS has been choosing Words of the Year since 1990. The Word of the Year for 2005 was "truthiness," invented by Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," and defined by the ADS as "what one wishes to be the truth regardless of the facts." (Read the full list of winners for 2006 and past yearsexternal link) Winning words or phrases don't have to be brand new; what's important is that they gained new prominence in the past year. The society is dedicated to the study of the English language in North America, and includes academics, writers, and others. |
