Default What happens if you don

I just read that when a green card expires after ten years it's just the card that expires, not your permanent residency. So I was just wondering what would happen if you would choose to not renew your green card? Will you then be considered out of status? Are there any other consequenses or could a person theoretically stay legally in the US forever even if they never renew their green card?

Thanks
