My Green Card App was Denied

Hello,

I came to US after my mom applied for us. She was a refugee who was granted political ssylum. That was ten years ago and I was a minor. My mom eventually got her green card and then her US citizenship. I recently applied for green card, after saving $$$ for sometime, but they denied it because I was "granted derivative asylum status as a child." And since my mom became a citizen, she is no longer a refugee and I'm not a child of refugee. The letter continues to say I'm still entitled to stay in US as asylee and retain employment authorization. I didn't get a refund for the money, almost $1200, i sent by the way. Regardless, is there any workaround? The letter gives appeal option via form I-290B but no idea what to say or what to present. Please advise and thanks a million.
