Default Advance Parole and Indian Passport .Unique Experience

I had a unique experience coming back from a week long business trip from Germany to Boston. I have expired H1 visa and advance Parole based on my pending I485. The immigration officer told me that I have to have 'machine readable passport' to be able to use Advance Parole , so I could not enter US. I told him that I had 4 business trips last year without any problem and no body ever told me that. He said, "I am sure you were told that". In other words he told me that I was telling a lie.

Result: An office was called to escort me to secondry inspection

They made me wait for about 20-25 minutes before being called again. This officer repeated about the machine readable passport thing. He added, "How did they let you board the plane without machine readable passport" ? I told him that I showed them passport and Advance Parole and did not have problem. I told him that I never knew that and now that he told me, I will get one made. He again told me to have a seat.

At this point of time I thought I was going to be deported back. After another 20 mintues, he called his fellow officer who told him and me that I was all clear. Also he added that I do not need to have "Machine readable passport" to be able to enter. I do not need to get one made. Regular passport with Advance parole was good.

This gave me infinite frustration and waste of my 2 hours on airport.

Nutshell is I was cleared but I am now having fears to leave US ever again which I have to do many times as a part of my job. These people who themselves do not know the rules.

Regardless, I am thinking of getting my new passport made which is machine readable just to rule out this thing happening again. Do you know if Indian consulates in US (New York) specially, makes machine readable passports ?

I think by default all passports made now are machine readable at all Indian Embassies.

Both me and my wife recently got our passports renewed from Washington DC.
Our reason to renew was the same that - we thought it is better to have machine readable passports henceforth.
And I think there is an international rule that all passports have to be machine readable by 2014.
Also my wife was refused French Visa because her passport was more than 10 yrs old.

Can anybody please confirm if the ones made in New York are Machine readable or not. I do not want to go through the stress that I had to go through again. It is sad that these people who should be knowing the law make others suffer because of the ignorance of the law.

Could you elaborate what you mean by a passport that is not machine readable. Which year was it made?

Pappu, I think the machine readable has a barcode which they can scan and get all the information.
Another question now is can I get my new one made when the old one still has validity of more than two years (Just do not want the same frustration again). ?

I have one more question if anybody can help. I looked online that to get passport issued , you have to fill verification of nationality form which needs
1. Permanent address in India
2. Names and addresses of two friends and addresses at your permanent address in India.

My question is: I left india 14 years ago. I have no permanent address there. My friends are also scattered. How do I get my passport now ?

Me too. I entered US 4 times last year without any problems. I even went to extent to tell the immigration officer about that. He did not bother. I even told him that nobody told me before about getting machine readable passport. He indirectly said that I was telling a lie. These are really incompetent people.

The passport comes with 'kind of' bar codes under the picture & signature.

Indian missions are now issuing passports of that model. Mine does not have but my spouse passport has.

New York consulate issues Machine Readable Passports. This is the stupidest thing that has come out of an CBP officer's mouth. I have heard stupid things before but, this takes the cake.

I traveled in a non MR passport with AP until last Sept when I renewed my passport at NY Indian Consulate. All POE were JFK.

Default Green card issue

Unlike the long-term problems in entitlement programs such as Social Security, the solutions to reducing the long wait times for employment-based green cards are easy to implement and have received bipartisan support. How can a personal attorney provide assistance in this situation?
