One my friend forwarded me this PDF which clearly explains about how to call CIS and various available options - see specifically graphic which illustrates the first several levels of the current USCIS general customer service menu. I found this really useful and easy to understand. I was confused not knowing correct information & phone number to call in order to find out status of my application - found this very useful.
