h4- h1 question

Hi
I am on h4 visa. I have a job offer from an american company. Can I start working with them as soon as they file for H1? Or Will I have to wait till it get approves. Also a couple of years back my h1 was filed with a consultancy. Due to economy and no project I shifted back to H-4. Will the company be able to find out about my prev h1 if i dont tell them. If they file without knowing will it be a problem with uscis?
