Can I extend my H1B Visa without GC process being started?

Hello, I am on H1B visa, in 6th year. My visa expires in Jan 19, 2009. If I start my GC process by April or May 2008, would I be able to extend my H1b Visa next year, ie., 2009?

As far as I know, I dont think you can. Labor has to be filed atleast a year before H1B expiry of 6th year in order to be eligible for 7th year extension.

If your I-140 is approved, it does not matter if your labor is less than one year old. So shoot for quicker processing of labor and I-140.
