STEM OPT Extension EAD card expiry date typo error

Hi,

I have 17 month STEM OPT Extension approved from USCIS. When I checked it on the EAD card it said valid from 08/15/2011 to 01/14/2012 ( valid for 5 months). I was surprised to see that the expiry date was not 01/10/2013 (instead of 17 months). The OPT extension I-20 I got from my DSO has expiry date 01/14/2013. I immediately called USCIS customer service and the rep took all the details and said USCIS will contact you within 30 days for the next steps.

Has anybody seen this kind of typo errors on EAD card from USCIS? Have they been resolved without any issues?

Is there anything else I need to do?

I got my EAD card stem opt extension approved but my card had typo errors on it. The expiration date is wrong on it. The actual date should be 12/5/2012 but i got it as 7/5/2012. Just got 1 year extension and not 17 months according to the date. I called uscis and gave all my details and they gave me a referral number and asked me to wait 30 days until uscis guys contact me through mail or phone. Does anybody have any update on this further? What will be done next? Do we need to send them all documents again?

I also have the same issue. The dates that my card have are 08/09/2011 to 01/09/2012 (5 months). The expiration date has to be 01/09/2013 instead. I also called USCIS and they gave me a case number and said someone will contact me in 30 days. Did you hear from them yet?? Is there anything else that I can do??

I also have the same issue. The dates that my card have 09/13/2011 to 02/13/2012 (5 months). The expiration date has to be 02/13/2013 instead. I called USCIS on sept 15th jus waiting for their notice.

Please update me in case if anyone of you get any update from uscis.

Hello,

I got an email from uscis after ending them a service request withing 13 days. They asked me to send my birth certificate. I did not understand what an opt ead card has to do with birth certficate. They also asked me send any other supporting documentation so I am sending all the scanned copies which I sent uscis earlier for opt extension and they also asked me send original ead card back and a letter explaining the error.

I will have to send them this week and wait for their response. But I will be loosing my EAD card and god knows how long they will take to process and send me new one if at all they feel they printed the dates in error.

I heard generally they up to 60 days to process(not sure though)

I Called USCIS on sept 13th they said they are going to send notice to my mailing address in 30 days but i did't here any thing thing from them . So i called again today morning for my status she said i need to send back my original card. They are not giving me the approximate time for the processing also. I have 4 months left .Do we have any other option?

Update from my side.

I waited for 30 days and did not get any reply either by email or snail mail. I called up USCIS again and the rep said now this will be expedited request and I should hear within 5 days. Waited for a week and did not get any reply for the expedited request, I called up again and the rep said that I was emailed (which I never got) that I should send the original EAD card along with supporting documents (such as birth certificate).
At this point I contacted my University DSO and explained her the problem and DSO contacted the service center and she got the reply in 10 minutes (compared to my waiting time of 2 months). The reply to my DSO from DHS read like below.

"You will need to return the EAD with a copy of the I-20 saying the expiration date on the card was incorrect and you need a corrected card issued. Be sure to put EXPEDITE REQUEST in bold letters on the outside of the envelope and on top of your correspondence with a cover sheet"

So I did as per the email and sent it by Fedex last week. For all folks who have a similar problem be sure to take a photocopy of EAD card before you send out the original one. Now I need to wait for however long until this issue is resolved. The worst part is there is no tracking number for this case as told by the USCIS rep. I will post any updates in this forum, if any.

Thanks for the update. Can I know to which office of uscis you posted the document? Is it nebraska or arizona or any other office? Can you please mention the address. I am planning to send my original ead and other supporting docs tomorrow oct 17th. Also, can we change employers in between after sending the original card back to uscis? In that case should I send the new i20, new employment letter again to uscis ? Please let me know if you have any idea about these issues.

Just wait for 10 days you will get your new EAD.

Update from my side

The Fedex with my documents reached Nebraska Service center on 10/10/2011. In 5 days I got a case status update email that EAD card has been ordered for production. Today I received it and this time no more typos. I am relieved.

My advise to you would be the turnaround time would be really quick.

Thanks for update. You said you got an email right. Which email id did you get it to? to the school email id or did you provide them any other email id while sending the packet?
and I did send my packet and they received it on friday oct 21st. But I sent to aa different address not the 850 street which you wrote in the post. I was goven a diffferent address by the uscis in their email which they sent me 4 weeks back. Mine is not an expedite request so will it take loner time?

The address i gave you is the one to be used if you want to send documents by FedEx. If you want to send it by USPS then it should have been a P.O.Box address for NSC which I presume is the one you sent to. It should be fine as fedex would not accept with PO box in the TO address.

The email response I included in the thread was the one my University DSO got in response from NSC when DSO emailed the service center. My DSO forwarded the response to my email ID.

I never got any response from the service center per se.

I am not sure about longer time for not putting in expedited request. I would imagine the response would be quick as it is their mistake.

Good luck with your new card and I think it will be sorted out.

I got my opt card back and this time without errors. Received it three days back and yes the process was quick took 3 weeks. Thanks everybody for their support and posts.
