Visa Stamping Experience at Calutta Consulate, India
My Status: H1B 8th Year extension approved and 485 was pending at NSC since March 2007.
We had appointment at the Calcutta Consulate at 10.30AM for me and my wife on March 19th 2007. We left our 3 year old daughter at the hotel with a baby sitter and reached the consulate around 9.30AM. The security guard outside the consulate asked us to stand in a small queue (around 10 of us were there). He examined our passports and visa interview appointment letters and let us in. Once inside, we were asked to show all our papers. Our bags were thoroughly checked for mobile phones, stapler etc. Once cleared, they gave us a token and asked us to proceed towards the main hall after passing through the security gate. At the entrance of the visa hall, we had to handover the token and the main door was opened. At the left side of the hall we were asked to submit our DS156 and DS157. There was an Indian lady at the counter who sounded very rude to all the candidates. She supposed to verify all the papers only and pass on to a queue from where the Visa Officer at the counter would call for interview. Probably she wanted to show off. For example: She shouted at my wife who by mistake put my cell phone number at the column for Business Phone Number. I also overheard her saying to somebody that “I see 100 people like you everyday”, “I will be surprised if you would be issued a visa”, “I know my job and US Visa rules better than you”. blah blah….. The best policy is to not to react but do what ever they ask you to do. Once we gave all the papers at the counter, we were asked to take a seat and wait for our name to be called. Surprisingly, our name was called with in 10 minutes. The visa officer was a lady. She just asked me “How much your company is paying you?” and “where you are with your Green Card Processing”. I answered them politely. She said I can collect the passport next day from the VFS office. She also gave me the address where to go? I am out of the consulate by 10.05AM.
So, overall it was pretty smooth. I also saw couple of guys had their American born kids with them. I unnecessarily paid 500/hr to the baby sitter. So, if you have a small kid I think you can safely take them with you. This is only my suggestion; you should judge what is best for you.
