Default Visa Confusion

Currently I am on L1(blanket) for company X. Company Y has filed and received H1B for me. Now they have applied to USCIS for COS.

I have already given notice to company X, anticipating to receive COS this week.

If COS does not come by this time and I quit company X, can I stay in the US legally? What are my options here?

My I-94 is valid till sep 2010.

well, you can ask your company Y to do a premium processing of your COS application. It's not legal to stay in this country after you quit.

Actually thats not true. You are legal to stay in US while your COS is being processed. But if the COS is being rejected then you would have to leave like the same day. But till then you are good to stay in US.
