I would say you just got lucky. Most of the times when you are in transit the Officers will see your valid visa/other permits to make sure you are allowed to go. If they have doubts they will detain you and will grill you till they are satisfied. It is a very risky situation if you don't abide by the rules.

I will leave it open for people to post their experiences, because I was questioned in Dubai when I was traveling to Frankfurt. They wanted further proof that I was working there even though I had a valid visa. I had to produce a drivers license by which the officer was happy and let me board the plane. That said, the German consulate clearly states you need a transit visa if you hold an AP. So if you are in hands of a strict officer who goes by the rules imagine your situation. If you want to risk it no one is stopping you... It was just my opinion as I experienced it. Hope you get my point.

Hello Shan24,
You can keep beating around the bush, and if you are hell-bent on flying thru Frankfurt..you only have 2 choices
1) Either get the visa
2) or take the risk and fly without a visa.

I just traveled through Frankfurt by Lufthansa (dep: may 25 and arr: jun 15) . I took great pain in getting the transit visa but the ticketing guy at IAD said that I dont need a transit visa and also I was no where asked or checked for transit visa at Frankfurt airport nor my passport was stamped either.

Caution : In case if you you still go for visa, you need to get an appointment to apply for Transit visa at Washington DC and it is currently one month wait time.

there is no rule for Transit visa. In fact i went to German consulate before leaving to india for transit visa , The VO confirmed no transit visa reqd. So I took the written mail conf. from them during my travel for the safer side no where they asked transit visa.

Exclamation Damn it.

This thing is killing. I just sent an email to them and they say "you have to have a visa". I thought I will use their email response as a proof and move forward.

Good afternoon,

Yes, you will need an airport transit visa. German Missions in the United States - Airport Transit
Please note that you will need an appointment in order to apply for a visa at the German Consulate in Boston.
The visa appointment scheduler can be accessed under the following link:

It's a case of rule and enforcement. Clearly the rule is there but it's not getting uniformly enforced.

Being a bit conservative myself, I would rather go by the rules than risk on enforcement, or the lack thereof.

My wife's H4 visa got expired on 30th April, 2012. She is going to Kolkata on 15th July through Air India directly from JFK to New Delhi. But to to Pilot's strike the direct flight is changed and would have a stop at France airport. I believe my wife needs a direct airside transit visa. Can anybody confirm please?

Read the following
Airport transit visa - Consulat Général de France à Washington

As your wife's final destination is India she would not need a transit visa.
"expired visa issued by the United States of America if you are leaving this country and your final destination is your own country."

Air India's strike is over and hopefully by the 15th their schedule should be normal and the flight might go to Delhi non-stop. My parents recently came via the same flight on that day the flight was late people were transported by a bus to a secure area in the Airport terminal and then asked to board again, probably on a day when flight is operating normally terminal access maybe permissible in that case they would just check if you have valid documentation for for destination.

Thanks Teddy. I called France consulate in NY today but they told me that my wife needed a transit visa. I would call them again on Thursday and mention them about the link you have provided here. I would post the update here.
