Default Retaining Green Card

I obtained my Green Card in June 2012. Due to my sponsoring employer needs, I have to constantly travel outside the country for extended periods of time usually up to 4 months at the time. I have been returning to the states every 4 months but staying for only 2 to 3 weeks in the US at a time. I know that a permanent residence must live in the US and I hope my situation goes on for no more than a couple of years. Do you recommend me staying longer in the US every time I am back? If yes, how far can I stretch it to fulfill my job responsibilities without jeopardizing my permanent residency? Any other advice besides from time spent in the country?

Thanks in advance.
