Default Law prohibiting being in US while out of status but valid I-94?

Can't seem to find the answer to my this question which seems so simple. Calling the CPB now but they don't seem to know either. Frustrating!!! Any Canadians out there that could help me with that? I’m a Canadian professional working in the US. I have been given a TN visa and a year long -I-94 in March 2012. Now my contract with the US employer will end this August. Do I fall out of status then? If so, may I remain in the US while out of status but with an unexpired I-94 card? Is there a law that prohibits me from doing so? If so what are the sanctions. I’d like to stay because my girlfriend lives here.

Thank you,

Tony

You need to leave US as soon as your employment ends. You can return back on TN visa with a new employment else you will have long term consequences with reference to Immigration.

I would suggest talking to an experienced attorney in this matter.
