Moving to India with US born kids - Checklist
Friends, please pardon me if this isn't the right venue to float these queries. My wife and I have been blessed with two kids (a toddler and a newborn) and we're relocating to India soon for good. The kids are US born. My Green Card is still in progress but we've different priorities for which we need to go back home.
I was wondering what formalities we need to take care of for a smooth transition for our kids at least from a documentation standpoint. I've made the list below and will be thankful to you, if you can provide your thoughts/experiences:
- Get birth certificate
- Get SSN
- Get US Passport
- Get PIO card
- Make sure you have enough family photos with your kids showing their progression - this is important to renew their US passports in India
- Inform IRS about children's relocation? Is it necessary from a social security or taxation standpoint?
- Register kids at the US consulate in India (As far as I know, unlike adults, kids below 16 are not required to register at the local registrar's office in India every 6 months - kindly correct me if I'm wrong)
- Obtain medical records from pediatrician
- Obtain school records, if any
Good luck with your endeavors and thank you for your time.
