Default No CIR this year

President Obama was asked about immigration reform at the news conference marking 100th day of his presidency. POTUS talked in general about increasing border security and his support for CIR. The reporter followed up asking if there will be a legislation by end of this year to which POTUS replied (I am paraphrasing here) that he sees the process moving forward this year. He also added that he has been accused of doing too much and he does not have control over the legislative calendar.

Unlike healthcare or education POTUS did not commit to a legislation this year for immigration.

Extract from politico -

POTUS said he wants key Hispanic lawmakers to put together "a framework about how this legislation might be shaped."

"I see the process moving forward this year," Obama said, noting that he doesn't have control over the legislative calendar

Reality Check: Very few members of Congress and even fewer Obama officials think it's realistic to get immigration reform done this year.

CIR 2009? Forget about it. There will be attempts in 2009 and 2010. There is a possiblity2011 or 2012 because that period is close to next Presidential election. If CIR is passed in 2009 or 2010 that will not help for Obama as people will forget and some other issue will decide next president.

I am not sure why are we so optimistic that there will be relief for EB community in CIR. Did everybody forgot what happened in CIR 2007?

I think we have to fight our battle seperately irrespective of CIR or no CIR.

Default I agree

Whenever any elected official talks about CIR the focus is on border security, guest worker program, reducing the cost of immigration, undocumented workers etc. Legal immigration hardly gets mentioned. The only talk about legal immigration is H1B. Sometimes I wonder if the lawmakers even know about the struggles of EB community. Though this reality is well known, it is painful to see it play this way again and again.

Other way of looking at it is that EB reform is not cumbersome, the solution is simple - make USCIS more efficient and recapture numbers.

You discuss about this issue over and over, this is the solution. This is already been debated enough. It is better not to TALK about this anymore. I am hoping EB provision will be included in the CIR and but for economic conditions, it may not have as much resistance as amnesty.

EB reform - all it needs is a window of opportunity to be brought up which is unfortunately tied up to CIR.

So now that CIR 2009 story has gone.

It again confirms the need that we should contribute to IV and try to push the bills which may help us.

So stop believing in CIR and start contributing (time or money or volunteering effort).

So that IV can work on bills that will help us all.

Default No CIR please

You are right. The EB community is better off without CIR. CIR would only make things worse for us directly(due to restrictions on EB & H1B) and indirectly(Illegals clogging the already choked up pipeline). So CIR is definitely not going to help with AFL-CIO in control. Having said that I would also like to add that restrictions may come on us even without a CIR with a poor economy and Democrat Controlled Congress.
