US Senator readies new plan to hike H1-B visas Sridhar Krishnaswami in Washington | May 23, 2006 19:04 IST As the US Senate inches towards a vote on a bill with a provision for increasing the H-IB visa cap, a Republican senator who brought another proposal on immigration reform has expressed hope that his plan would improve upon the existing one. The present Senate plan calls for nearly doubling the 65,000 annual cap on H-1B visas with provision for a 20 per cent increase on an annual basis. It would affect thousands of skilled Indian workers seeking employment in the US. But Senator John Cornyn's 'Securing Knowledge, Innovation and Leadership' (SKIL) bill exempts from the H-1B cap any professional who has earned a post graduate degree from an accredited US university. When asked whether he was trying to merge provisions of the SKIL Bill into the Immigration bill being debated in the Senate which likely to vote on it later this week, Cornyn said his was a "standalone bill" which raises the cap on H1B visas even higher. "I support the provisions with regard to H-1B visa reform in the underlying bill. Essentially the SKIL bill's a standalone bill that we hope to fold into the underlying legislation to further improve what is already a good thing, but could be made even better," the Texas lawmaker said. The SKIL bill aims to retain highly skilled workers who are educated in the US, promoting competitiveness through a market-based approach and reduces paperwork burdens on employers and professional workers who have a record of complying with immigration laws |

Republican warns his party, urges immigration action Susan Page, USA TODAY's Washington bureau chief, files for On Deadline about a Republican lawmaker's warnings for his party today, including an emphasis of the immigration issue: ![]() One of the most highly regarded political strategists in Congress ( Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va.) has dire warnings for his fellow Republicans. ..... Davis is chairman of the House Government Reform Committee and former head of the National Republican Congressional Committee. He called it a "very correctable problem for us, but we have to change things." Passing an immigration bill is key, he says, because the topic has inflamed voters in many districts. "If you get no deal, you get no agreement, the borders remain porous and you get no progress. It certainly doesn't help Republicans." He called it "a test for voters -- are Republicans capable of governing? ... We've got to get a resolution." .............. LINK at USAToday.com Last edited by learning01; 05-24-2006 at 04:33 PM. |

Allard tries to derail immigration bill
By M.E. Sprengelmeyer, Rocky Mountain News May 24, 2006 WASHINGTON — Sen. Wayne Allard today is trying to throw a late procedural roadblock in the way of pending immigration reform legislation, though the bill still appears headed toward Senate approval this week. Allard, R-Loveland, opposes the senate bill because he believes it grants "amnesty" to people who entered the country illegally. But he's trying to derail it on budgetary grounds. Questioning the estimated $54 million cost of implementing immigration reforms, Allard raised a budget "point of order" against the bill Wednesday afternoon. It's a procedure that alleges the bill's costs violate budget restrictions, and would force senators to vote to waive the restrictions. A vote was expected later Wednesday. ....... The late attempt to derail the bill is considered a long shot after senators voted 73-25 Wednesday morning to limit debate and move to final consideration of the measure. Allard was among the 25 Senators who voted against that cloture motion, but they failed to get the 41 votes it would have taken to stall the bill with unlimited debate. Following is posted on washingtonpost.com
Link http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...052300179.html From the above link .. "With the Senate marching toward completion of an immigration bill that is more generous to illegal immigrants than the House-passed version, House leaders said yesterday that it will be difficult to reach a compromise and enact a measure. Several House Republicans said an accord is possible only if President Bush pours his full energy into the effort, which they say is an uncertain prospect given his preoccupation with Iraq, his low poll numbers and GOP skittishness about November's elections. " I think as the bill passed by other house did not have any thing for immigration .. It certainly will be a battle there. I hope in the next step, provisions that will ease retrogression/back log will find some favour or atleast no opposition. If Senate passed so many number of amendments , would it be that , Judiciary committe reduce it to House version, stripping every thing ? !! My plain opinion it won't be the case , if some thing stays in what stays in finally ! Last edited by go_gc_way; 05-24-2006 at 09:37 PM. |
