we all need to write to this reporter to cover our story as a second part of his story. Every time someone has to cover legal immigration, they focus on increase in h1B quota and neglect our issue. This is due to the lack of awareness for our cause. writing to Michael Kinsman: (619) 293-1370; michael.kinsman@uniontrib.com and newspapers that publish immigration related articles would help us. please do not forget to mention Immigration voice name and website in your letter so that they can get more details |

August 30, 2006, 3:59 PM EDT NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (AP) _ Immigration agents arrested 34 suspected illegal workers at a tomato greenhouse Wednesday in the latest in a series of workplace raids. The workers each face criminal charges of using a fraudulent green card and false use of a Social Security number. They were arrested around 8 a.m. at the Fortistar Hydroponic Tomato Greenhouse in this city north of Buffalo. A call to Fortistar's corporate office was not immediately returned. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have stepped up worksite enforcement efforts. Earlier this month, 41 alleged illegal aliens were arrested after being hired to clean at the Erie County Fair. |

August 31, 2006 - The US is home to an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants and the debate over immigration reform is about to heat up once again. It was the largest protest ever staged in Fresno. Four months ago, 10,000 people marched on City Hall as part of a national day of support for immigrants' rights. Those who took to the streets wanted their voices heard in Washington D.C. and they were. Steven Law, of the US Department of Labor stated, "We need to effectuate an immigration reform package now that will secure our border, but also offer opportunities for people who want to come here to work and raise their families." Law was a participant in an immigration forum in Fresno. The debate over immigration reform stalled when Congress adjourned for the summer. The Senate version of an immigration bill offers a path to citizenship for those who have been here at least five years. The House version does not include a guest worker program, and makes it a felony to illegally enter this country. Congressman Radanovich says they'll start from scratch next week to try to craft a bill all sides can agree on. "I think everybody agrees the two bills out there, the one in the senate and the one in the house, are deader than a doornail because they're too far apart." The United Food Workers of America calls the house version unacceptable. Giev Kashhkooli of UFW said, ". . .to take people who are picking our crops and are feeding our nation, to call them criminals, to call call a pastor of a member of a church helping that person a criminal. . .That's a non-starter." Local leaders say border security will be the priority of any immigration bill, but it must accommodate the labor needs of the Valley's rich ag industry. Congressman Radanovich and Senator Jim Costa say they'll bring back to Washington the views of local growers and business leaders. Work on immigration reform resumes after labor day. |
