Default save taxes 2008 - what can I do now?

My spouse and I did not maximize our 401(K). We are not eligible for IRA now. What other investments can we make now (after Jan 2009) to save taxes for 2008.

Default IRA - no tax break

Yes. We can contribute to IRA now. But it wont provide us any tax break because our joint income is above the eligility criteria. I was wondering if there are any tax saving funds or insurance plans etc to which we can contribute to reduce taxes.

Default Self Directed IRA

Even me and my wife are above the limit specified of the IRA. So we cannot claim tax benefits on that.
I came to know the concept of self directed IRA .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Directed_IRA
http://www.trustetc.com/

Although this concept was told by ISBN but I read through it and found that this is possible.
Wondering if income limit has to do with this.

I ran into same issue last year and researched all avenues nothing available, if you earn more you pay more taxes that is the truth.
You can plan for 2009 by contributing more for 401 K, if you have child use dependent day care accounts. Use Flexible spending account also.

Default Sep-ira

If you work for a small employer, then SEP-IRA might be an option. First do your home work, research on SEP-IRA and then contact your employer. Under this IRA, each and every emplyee of your company would have to put a fixed percentage to this account.
Like I said, do your homework. You can contribute up to 25% of your salary (upto 45000 USD) in this IRA. Something that govt just can not touch.
