Question H2b applying for EAD

I'm on a H2B visa that will expire on May 1st. I will apply for change of status I-485 and EAD. If I send my forms before May 1st will they cancel my current H2B visa? If I wanna work for my employer until the end of the contract should I wait to send my paperwork, or will it be ok to get the EAD and finish my contract with the H2B visa??
