very valid question. For the most people it would not have, for some They might have switched on to a diff position or started a business.

However GC is just not about that, it's more like flexibility. for one thing you don't have to keep renewing your AP/EAD, H1-B.

Your travel pains are alleviated. (Some countries don't require a visa if you have a GC). But most of them do..

You don't need to get Visa stamped in your passport

There is no uncertainity about the future.

Those are the things that would come with a GC. Without that bottom line : we are still temporary workers. Note that term "temporary".

Logistically Its definitely convenient and beneficial to have a green card.

From a life perspective, its human nature to strive for something that is not available to you but is to others

My views on this :

It is Shame ( Same I mean ) before and after GC.

After 1 yr I switched my Job for little more pay, ( It was flex as not to worry about Paper works )

My Main point is Even If I get Citizenship, If I dont have a good Job in all respects it does not make sence. In this country if there is good Pay Job then everything will be good ( for that matte it is same in India also now with all the price increase overall )

my 2 paise.

This is a very valid question. Really thanks for the imh1b for starting this. Is it really worthful spending a decade of our life's prime time in green card waiting.

No change in life. GC didnt add extra happiness. Happiness and unhappiness exists before and after GC.

In my view, after getting the GC, life will become straigtened for the current set of "top issues" - like job change flexibility, travel ease, different roles, starting a business, spouse work flexibility etc. etc.

But human nature, as it is, other "top issues" that were suppressed until then will substitute for the current top issues - like getting a "better house", "better car", "how to balance time with parents getting older", "how to raise children with the right cultural & educational priorities", etc. etc. etc.

Bottomline is that vehicle of life that is mostly stuck in neutral gear in 3 ft of snow right now, will get into gear and we will be able to move our lives forward towards getting on a proper paved road and eventually towards the highway.

I can share my experience. One thing you get after GC is a big releif. Example in this economy you are not really worried of layoff and how that affects your status. You can be more assertive if you feel you are been pushed. Least this as been true for me. Another is less trips to DMV they have me 8 Yr license. Havent travelled so far but am sure that will be a breeze. Now was this all worth spending a decade of youth I am not really sure.

Default flexibility in the life is the biggest difference i think

GC will give flexibility for anyone who are probably holding their plans for things such as
1. Change of jobs -- more inclined for Perm jobs with better pay
2. Buy a home in a place where we like most ( not meaning that we buy exotic homes, but just enough to call it a "home" )
3. realizing the dream of having own company and employ others as well ( one can start even without GC, but with some constraints)
4. For those whose kids are about to go for colleges, will have better choices ( i mean change of city or state as parents also can try to get into another local job without hassles)
5. eligibility for unemployment benefits in case of a job loss & not to worry about "status"
6. Last but not least, drivers license and travel comfort

For sure, in my case i will start my own company ( software product development) using one of my patents. May be small but one step at a time and i can give employment for some more people. I'm holding my plans for sometime.
But bottomline, we need to have paychecks coming in every other week and that's all it matters

Default yes

In our case life has certainly changed for better for all the reasons others have mentioned above, but i am most happy about not shelling anymore money for AP/EAD/DMV .(yeah i just noticed my status has changed to non-donor :-), will do something about it soon)
Its little difficult to answer a straight 'yes' or 'no' for the question 'is it worth it'? because situation varies from one individual to other and everyone reacts according to that current situation, but i would say getting a GC is definitely worth it provided your journey is not on the sad path... you know where you are getting exploited every day, work/life is a misery etc etc...
