Health care information systems and related opportunities
The recent stimulus package and budget has provisions for incentives to hospitals and related organizations to digitize health information systems. As the economy gets worse and jobs became shaky - this one area in IT seems to have some opportunities. As a backup option I want to know more about these systems (and I am sure many others would be interested too). So appreciate if knowledgeable people share info here.
Things I am interested to know:
(i) The health care information systems will invariably consist of several components and applications. I would assume it will have some database, some web portal type applications, and some digital picture analysis type applications. There are popular products in each of these functions. What is the current industry norm? - to use individual components (like Oracle for DB, some xyz web portal software etc.) and integrate them internally or use a ready-made commercial integrated health-care information system.
(ii) Acually are there any ready-made integrated health care systems available out there (by integrated I mean a single system that takes care of records repository, web portal or application UI, and may other components like messaging etc.). The basic idea behind this is to minimize costs and administrative issues - to achieve this I think these systems should be accessed by different people like doctors, nurses, insurance companies, and maybe even patients. Are there any industry standards/protocols to govern these?
(iii) somewhat related to point above - are there any industry certifications for IT professionals to get into this area (health care specific certifications)
(iv) Are there any small integrators or applications that are out there geared towards small hospitals and doctors?
(v) Any other things a beginner should learn about this area. Any relavant info or pointers in this area would also be useful.
Note: starting this thread as purely educational discussion, if admins think its not relevant - they can close it. Others - would appreciate if we can keep the discussion to the topic. thanks.
