Question What is FRESNO TAX REFUND?

Friends,

This is not immigration related, however I am facing a strange confusion. HOpe someone out there may be able to guide me.

I received a check in mail yesterday. Surprisingly there is only a check, no other paper or information inside the envelop.

The envelop & the check itself looks like from US dept of tresurey, however I am not expecting any at this point of time (atleast I don't remember). I have never ever stayed, worked in fresno. I am not in CA either.

first I thought of tax refund, however I did e-file and it is directly settled with my bank account. Then I thought of stimulus, but that is also not the case as last year I did receive stimulus check, and also there was a letter explaining about the check. So What else it could be? There is no phone number, address given where can I call and ask. I searched google, some ppl received similar check but have no idea from where it came. (found on yahoo answers when searched for 'fresno tax refund'. Also found posted on other forums but no definite answer found yet)

Can this be a possible scam? On envelop it is written that this is from philadelphia, inside on check its written as fresno tax refund and I can also see word 'Austin' written. I am confused. I am not sure if it is genuine or fake. I know there is no free lunch, and hence I am scared if this is a case of id theft or some other scam. If it is not genuine, I would certainly like to report this to authority. However first I thought I ask more information if anyone else has also received this kind of mail.

Is there anyone who also received similar check or have any idea? If yes, please share. Help me figure out ...

If worried about identity theft then immediately check your credit profile. Check credit reports, credit scores etc for free. Make sure about any unauthorized activity. I am not sure how but you can check employment history as well. Check for any red flags.

Nobody sends free check, especially treasury. Call IRS.

There is a chance that this could be a check to get you enrolled in some program where by cashing this check you are signing the contract to pay for their schemes etc.

BTW how much is the check for?

I would not agree. Quite a few times depositing check has hidden clause of enrollment in something. I used to get check from Bank Of America of $10, if I deposit, I am automatically enrolled in their credit monitoring package costing $159 / year.

Be careful.

Please spend 2 minutes and complete your profile. Without data people would consider you are fake.

The guy clearly says he never stayed or worked in Fresno, why would he get a refund ? Checking credit report after depositing a fake/scam check, is that a good idea ?

addsf345, you rightly said there are no free lunches. So, why don't you call the IRS or the "Fresno Tax Authority" (if something like that exists) and find out ? If you did not live in Fresno, I can't imagine why you would get a tax refund.

I don't know what details I can fill out. I have not filed for GC yet and my handle says so. Is there any other detail that needs to be filled out?

Question found a customer care number to call

I found below information from treasury website, will try to call today. However some ppl reported earlier (2006) that they received such checks and had no luck getting it verified from bank or calling 1-800 number for verification.

Treasury Issued Check Payments
For all questions regarding the issuance of a U.S. government-issued check (e.g. federal tax refund check, Social Security benefit check, etc.) please contact the Department of the Treasury, Financial Management Services (FMS) office. As FMS provides centralized payment, collection, and reporting services for the U.S. Government, FMS is the primary disburser of payments to individuals on behalf of various federal agencies.

You may reach FMS by phoning 1-800-826-9434 or by visiting the official FMS website at: www.fms.treas.gov.

Default May be Telephone.

I have heard a refund being made for telephone.
This may be because of that.

IRS Announces Standard Amounts for Telephone Tax Refunds
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced the standard amounts that most long-distance customers can use to figure their telephone tax refund. These amounts, which range from $30 to $60, will enable millions of individual taxpayers to request the telephone tax refund without having to dig through old phone bills.
In general, anyone who paid the long-distance telephone tax will get the refund on their 2006 federal income tax return. This includes individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations. The 2006 return is usually filed during 2007.

The standard amounts are based on the total number of exemptions claimed on the 2006 federal income tax return. The standard amounts are $30 for a person filing a return with one exemption, $40 for two exemptions, $50 for three exemptions and $60 for four or more exemptions. For example, a married couple filing a joint return with two dependent children (for a total of four exemptions) will be eligible for the maximum standard amount of $60.

“The easiest way for eligible taxpayers to get their money back is to use the standard amounts,” said IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson. “These amounts save taxpayers from locating 41 months of old phone bills and analyzing these bills to determine the taxes paid. We believe the standard amounts are both reasonable and fair.”

To get the standard amount, eligible taxpayers only need to fill out one additional line on their regular 2006 return. The IRS is creating a special short form (Form 1040EZ-T) for those who don’t need to file a regular return.

The standard amounts are based on actual telephone usage data, and the standard amount applicable to a family or other household reflects the long-distance phone tax paid by similarly sized families or households. Those who paid the long-distance tax on service billed after Feb. 28, 2003 and before Aug. 1, 2006 are eligible for a refund.

Only individuals can use the standard amounts. Alternatively, individual taxpayers can choose to figure their refund using the actual amount of tax paid.

Much appreciate everyone for your inputs. I don't think this is a telephone tax refund as the amount is almost $400 on the check and I never used long distance service for inland USA calls, any possibility I could think is the reliance indiaCall where I spend around $40 each month so far.
