Default PIO to OCI

Hi,

My Son is US citizen and has PIO card now (from 2012 to 2027) and Parents we both are having Indian Passport.

According to the new rule How long my Son PIO is valid to travel India and when is the last day to use PIO / and apply OCI.

Thanks in advance.

I had got my son's OCI just few days back and hence my first question would be, how many years were still left on your son US passport for renewal? Reason, OCI need to be applied everytime you get a new US passport until your son gets 18 years.

If you had about one year left on US passport, I would suggest to use PIO until you renew your son's US passport and then apply for OCI. you can use PIO until then.

For my son Washington DC embassy took 5 1/2 months to change OCI in lieu of PIO.

Thanks for the Reply.

He has valid his passport 1 year 6 months.

I thought PIO needs to be Change as OCI before June 2016, but if can use until his passport
valid it will be great.

Thanks

If you change PIO to OCI before June 2016, it's free. In that sense you would still be paying processing fee of $42 or 47, I don't remember. But after June 2016, you will have to pay fees to change it to OCI.

If you renew now, it would take about 3 - 4 months and in another year you again had to renew it as your son's passport is renewed.

It's your take. Now or later.
