Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee – Patty Murray (WA) or Mary Landrieu (LA)
Armed Services—Carl Levin (MI)
Strategic Forces Subcommittee –Bill Nelson (FL)
Banking—Christopher Dodd (CT)
*Budget—Kent Conrad (ND)
Commerce, Science and Transportation—Daniel Inouye (HA)

Clean Air, Climate Change, and Nuclear Security Subcommittee – Thomas Carper (DE)
Finance—Max Baucus (MT)

Default AC360, John King

AC360, CNN

John King, CNN happened to mention yesterday on AC360, that CIR can be passed in the blink of an eye. He seems to think it is the easiest thing to do for the president and the Dems in the current situation.

Any thoughts ?

I think we should wait for the lame duck session to finish, to make any predictions. Because if there are any new last minute stunt on anything non-immigration, then for the next 6 months or so for the new house, they will be discussing this new stunt. Immigration will take the backseat.

Default CIR good for us?

Assuming this congress and senate would favor CIR...
is CIR good for us. Last time around when we discussed we concluded that it would overwhelm USCIS with work and they would not be able to attend our application for a while. So i wonder tagging along with illegals is going to speed our cause?

I spoke to some other members and we should have an action plan by next week. In the meantime, try to find out other members in your state and try to interact with them.

Regards,

Jimi

Default Adios Lame Duck 2006; Aloha 2007 Year of the Pig

Nancy Pelosi has long talked about her first 100 hour agenda and immigration is not on it. It would be amazing to see any immigration talk in lame-duck session.

Although, it would be a good start because both parties agree on it but I don't think the strategic think-tank in either party will rush to do that before seizing each other's deeper 2008 Presidential agenda.

Lets chalk out a strategy for next year, which is the Chinese year of the PIG.

Default not true

The one important thing people conveniently forget about CIR : the illegal aliens will NOT be able to apply immediately for a green card. Thats pure baloney being spread by vested interests like our self-appointed "Ombudman".

If you care to read the fine print, the original CIR has clearly mandated that all legal applications pending at the time of passage must be cleared before ANY illegal alien can apply for a green card. So assume CIR gets passed into law on 30 jan 2007 (OK that was overly optimistic ). All family-based and employment-based petitions with a PD prior to 30 Jan 2007 must be cleared before any illegal alien is eligible to apply. Anybody who has glanced at the visa bulletin might know that retrogression in FB goes back to 1980 in some categories. So, it may well be close to 25 years before any of today's illegal aliens can apply for a visa number. I would think that is sufficient time for congress to shore up USCIS to reach the strength required to process that many applications. This is the INTENT of the original CIR, what changes in the new (posibly more liberal ? ) version and how strictly USCIS will implement it is a different ball game altogether.

Realistically, it is highly unlikely that a democratic congress or the president will entertain standalone legislation like SKIL given the chances of CIR being revived. So chances are any relief we can get has to come through a comprehensive measure like CIR.

1/09/2006: Priorities for Lameduck Congress

* Report indicates that overhauling immigration may be in the list of the Democrats priority and President Bush has also expressed his readiness and willingness to go along with the Democrats on the legislation. Immediately after the result of the election became obvious, apparently the President called into the White House the leaders of GOP to discuss the priorities for the Lameduck session.
* Taking such discussion and the President's meeting with Rep. Pelosi, future Speaker of the House and exhange views on priorities for the two parties as a positive signial, the immigration stakeholders started igniting some hope, albeit uncertain, for potential action by the Congress and are cautiously preparing for their move in support of the immigration legislation. For the report on meeting between the President Bush and Rep.

Immigration is one of the very few issues the President and the Dems agree on. It would be good if this issue gets addressed as early as possible (part of building good faith) before they go back to pointing knives at each other. Which is bound to happen once Dems set up inquiry committees.
