Do your share: Important Advocacy Day Action Item

Dear Friends,

You are probably aware that most significant advocacy event is underway to ask Members of Congress to COSPONSOR H.R.213 - Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act of 2015, the bill to removes the per-country caps on Employment Based green cards. During this event we expect to have 350+ Congressional meetings with key offices.

In order to enhance the impact of these meetings, we will be posting information about some of the completed meetings on both Immigration Voice Facebook page and on the forums. We would really appreciate if you could periodically check our facebook page (or the forums) to find out the Congressional offices from your State where we need your help. And since this is time sensitive, please make phone calls promptly to the specific offices from your State if you see us post message for your help. Please also engage with your friends and colleagues and ask them to pitch-in to call Congressional offices.

When calling the specific office of Member of Congress from your State, you could help make the following points using terminology you are most comfortable with:

Quote:

  • I am a resident of their [STATE_OF_YOUR_RESIDENCE].
  • Representatives of Immigration Voice just visited your office to request the Representative to consider COSPONSOR bill H.R.213. I am calling from [STATE_OF_YOUR_RESIDENCE] to express my support and enforce the message requesting the Representative to give consideration for the request to COSPONSOR.
  • HR.213 bill is a simple technical fix that addresses long backlogs spanning decades in Employment Based Green cards for tax paying law abiding skilled immigrants. The bill doesn’t add any new Immigrant visas to the system. The last time this bill came up for the vote in 2011 as H.R.3012 it passed 389-15.
  • I would like to be in touch and call back next week to inquire about Representative’s decision.
  • Thank You!

Please try to make this call as soon as we post on our Facebook page. Our Facebook page and forums will be updated periodically throughout the day on 15th and 16th June as meetings are conducted. In order to make sure your calls are made in a timely fashion, please check our Facebook page and forums frequently. This is a time sensitive request and your active participation is key to making progress on this very important bill.

Thank you for your support,

Immigration Voice

We are working on getting the important meetings out for today but are facing a manpower crunch - many people were unable to do the full two days.

I am not saying we will not be able to get the list up today - but just saying it might be delayed.

Please continue to monitor our forums and FB for when the meetings will be posted.

Your calls are having the desired impact.

take home message from the event

IV community,

Thanks for being with us in this effort. Your persistence in calling your representative's local offices is very important in maintaining continuity to our efforts at DC. We had a very productive 2 day session at the congress, very warm reception and response and more than 90% offices agree with us. Their only request is, that they want to hear from their constituents. We had several states like FL, CA, NH from where we had no members attending this event. Some of us represented IV as this is a national problem, and even those offices gave us 30-45 mins and heard our requests and have not slammed the doors on us (as some people uses to scare away real fighters). I am reiterating again- they want to hear from their constituents- and they are you. Call every day, until they cosponsor the bill. I heard from one house member that one guy (who didn't even attend event and no one in IV knows him) represents IV and calls the representative's office every day (since last May) regarding the bill, and that representative is very eager to put her name on the list.

So my friends, please please keep calling, until they say YES.

Hum honge kaamyab ekdin! We shall overcome someday (very soon!)

It was an honor fighting the good fight by your side. There is no doubt in my mind that we will win this fight.

But people need to followup. This game is all about the followup.

We need the people in the districts to call in and say immigration voice is your voice - and HR.213 will be hugely beneficial for people in their states.

Thank you for coming. It was an honor fighting beside you and getting to know you as a human being.

Thank you Hill, all emotions and wishes are reciprocative. :)

Who knows who is who on an anonymous forum.

Even if you can figure out who the person behind the handle is, if you have never met the person, how do you get a measure of how trustworthy or knowledgable he is?

There are all kinds of weirdos on the web, who don't seem to have anything better to do with their time than prognosticate about developments in immigration policy.

The people who come to our events and know how things work - know that they are full of shit.

DMX17 06-17-2015 07:26 PM

Entertainment must go on, Hil! We have long wait times. lol

Thanks to all who made it to the event and represented the entire EB community to push for the cause.

hil3182 06-17-2015 08:23 PM

Let us keep this thread focussed on getting calls out - that is the only thing that matters right now.

I am sorry for detracting from that.

sunrl 06-17-2015 09:21 PM

I wanted to share my own experiences about the advocacy and even though it sounds like a broken record and pretty much having similar experiences as others it does mean a lot to me as I am one of those guy who doesn't get too excited about something very easily. I am not the one who would over analyze any issue or take a day off to hit refresh button just to see when the announcement comes out, I am more laid back and skeptical at first kind of guy.

I do understand like me, many of you might have had certain perceptions on how things happen, how things work in DC, how you might be treated at IV events, what are you going to say at congress man's or senator's office, would IV core start slamming at me if I make a mistake and this are all valid reasons that you might have thought and avoided participating in IV events and believe me I know this because I have always somehow convinced myself to avoid participating. Not sure at what moment I decided to register, most likely I had few too many drinks that day but once I hit the button I am going that commitment for me takes precedence over any other fear so I gathered the courage up (don't go by looks those who know me but I am a wuss usually) and hit the road. I understand there are many who can't do so but are genuinely interested in supporting the cause and the organization, for them there are plenty of ways to show the support other then going to IV events, so please look into using those opportunity to be a part of something that you believe in.

Last few days with IV seemed to me as the best decision I had made, yes there was a lot of work to be done but with so much energy and encouragement things just came naturally. Each and everyone was so helpful including the leadership and some of the things that I had perceived were all shattered and I felt so glad to be wrong. Even though I had been waiting for 12 years the stories I heard from others make mine nothing compared to what issue a lot of us are facing. I learned a lot about the process, what I also learned is action item that are asked is very carefully thought out and planned and if you were thinking by constantly repeating the message Hildingur (hil3182) is trying to torture you then let me say it that's not the case, there is a well thought out reason and a plan to do that, even if it is as simple as hitting a like button on Facebook post, so please follow it you would be glad that you did. I was fortunate to meet a lot of great people who are selflessly fighting for our cause and lot of them don't even face the problems anymore, but they still believe in the cause so they are spending their time and energy for those thousands who don't even know this organization exists.

In the end all I wanted to say I am very proud to be part of such fantastic organization and a special thanks to all those who made this experience happen. Thanks IV

I sincerely believe Hum honge kaamyab. And that is the reason my user name is "VShallOverCome" :)

I and my spouse have called the offices of the reps in my state and have also approached many friends in various states asking them to call the representatives of their states. To my surprise quite a few of my acquaintances are not familiar with IV and are not aware of H.R. 213, so trying to make them aware of these.
I have also lived in a couple other states at some point in time and so am going to call all the reps in our list from those two states. Some times the staff members ask for our postal address and I do not want it to look phoney so avoid calling states where I have never lived. By that token, many people have moved from one state to another and can call the reps of at least all those states where they live or have lived at some point in time.

And I sincerely want to say - I cannot thank IV team enough for whatever they are doing for all of us.

Thanks for stepping up. It will not be done by calling once. Follow-up is the key. Keep on calling the office as long as they say YES.

Jaggubhai, please read the last few communications in this thread and try to understand what we are asking you to do. Thanks for stepping up. :)

Yes. Until we get a yes from our congressmen/women. Calling not only the congressman from our district, but others in the state as well. That's what was recommended on IV facebook and earlier up in this thread.

I plan to do it every other day starting this monday (already called on mon/wed - need to do it tomorrow) with all congressmen from my state.

it's a great motivation for me personally from one of IV posts that someone has been calling daily his/her representative since may and the representative now is planning to support this bill. way to go anonymous person!

Welcome Vani, Thanks for stepping forward. We need motivated members like you to fight this cause. Please remember, you are the voice of immigration reform, so the cause is yours too. Hoping to see more active participation from you. :)

Co-sponsors that would really help:

Steve Scalise (Republican LA-1): House Majority Whip. Louisiana New Orleans area.
Kevin McCarthy (Republican CA-23): House Majority Leader. Bakersfield, CA area.
John Boehner (Republican OH-8): Speaker of the House. Nearby Cities. Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus OH area.

For the above, if you are in those states please don't forget to call. Please note that Kevin McCarthy and John Boehner did not give us appts because there was no one working those offices at the local level. Please adjust your message to those offices accordingly. For Boehner and McCarthy, it is particularly important to have local presence. So, if you or your friends/family can drive to their offices, please PM me.

We already have someone working on Steve Scalise locally (which is the main reason we got the meeting). But more people calling/visiting his offices, puts more pressure on them - so please step up.

Regarding Scalise, you can either collaborate or work independently with the person working the office - depending on your mutual comfort levels.

For everybody else on the list we published - please call.

There is one more thing you can do to enhance the impact of your call - ask to speak to the person who deals with immigration POLICY in their office and give the message to them instead of the first person who picks up the phone. Giving the message/voicemail directly to the immigration staffer eliminates the small risk of the message not reaching the right destination. You can get to the person who deals with Immigration Policy by asking to speak to a staffer who deals with immigration policy when they pick up the phone.

Quick Question

Hi,

Just for my own understanding on how the process works, is there a specific reason why you have only listed selected reps to call from each state? Also, it appears that Rep Leonard Lance from NJ is already listed as a co-sponsor to the bill. Any particular reason we need to follow up with him again?
