Exclamation short and long term disability insurance

Hello all,

I am changing jobs and the new company is a much smaller startup and does not have short term and long term disability benefits, which I do have at my current company.

My job is not hazardous or anything but I do believe that in certain conditions a longer term disability, like say from a freak accident can be more harmful then even a death if the primary bread winner can't work for longer time periods. Has any one here looked into buying these coverages on their own ?

Default Metlife offers but never tried to get quote.

As I thought we have to pay hefty premium on individual basis, I haven't tried to get quote. I am also interested since I work on hourly basis without any benefit.

Folks, please pour your thoughts and experiences.....

It is something GOOD to have , you feel secure against any small misfortune time like short/long term disability. Look for Term Life insurance , if you are more concerned about loss of lone bread winner.

Default Accidents and death...

We are not talking about death, about accidents which would cause long/short term disabilities; in this case life insurance would not rescue you.

You need to have backup plans to pay your bills, medical expenses and other expenses.

Life insurance and disability insurance are seperate animals. Life insurance pays if you drop dead and there is plenty of info available on the same and is fairly easy to get. The same is not true for disability insurance since most big companies offer those as standard benefits. Also most people don't bother about getting additonal coverage for themselves since citizens and pr are covered by the social security disability and the workers comp too which pays in case of a disability for them - Its different for H1's and that's why I have posed the question on this forum..

any more inputs ?

Yes, I bought this coverage about 2 yrs ago from Metlife. The monthly premium [approx $100 - $200] is calculated depending on your coverage, which in this case would be to continue to get the same amount of money as you salary in case of any short or long disability. Please check the terms before buying.
