I suggest staying away from Mexico at this time. I was there to attend a friend's marriage and it is very unsafe place. Frequent gun battles, murders between drug lords...

Be safe.

Default Mexico visitor visa

I've applied for both tourist and business visa for Mexico from Philadelphia embassy. It's pretty straight forward and they know about people going there for H1B stamping. I remember getting a single entry tourist visa for ~ $130. You would have to go there fill up some forms show some bank statements and H1B papers, they will take a copy of that and will ask you to come back in a week for stamping.

Regarding the safety, I think as long as you are in a safe neighbourhood you should be fine. I've been there a few dozen times for business.

Default check more info @ http://www.victorgarciainternational.com/

To apply for a Mexican Visa, you need to appear in person at a Local Mexican Consulate in US. (9:00 - 11:00 am).
From http://www.victorgarciainternational.com/

Normally, they will give you visa on the same or 2nd day. You need to print and fill up an application and take it to them along with appropriate documents. You'll find this info on: http://www.sre.gob.mx/elpaso

Then click on VISAS from left side panel. Then click Visit US Consulate. Then click HERE from #1, where it says Print the Visa Application.

Because of a new rule from the Mexican Authorities, now you only need to pay $36 dlls, as a Tourist Visa. You do not need to get an FM3, business visa. Unless you are traveling inside Mexico for business.

If your Local Mexican Consulate is not familiar with this new rule, please ask them to call the Mexican Consulate in El Paso, TX for verification at (915) 533-3644 or (915) 533-3645 ext. 242.

I just got a mexican visa last week..getting my H1b stamped at the Merida consulate this coming Monday..getting the mexican visa is fairly straightforward..they have the application form at the consulate (i had a filled one which I had downloaded from the website but it seems they don't have the right forms on the website)..and you need, photos, bank statements, flight tickets, copy of US visa/I-797 etc...if your US visa has expired and you are going to mexico to get a stamping then they also need a employment letter from your firm (I had to go back again for this)..and you can collect the passport in 3 days..
