Default New PIO card when US passport is renewed?

Does anyone know if the PIO card needs to be renewed or a new PIO card has to be obtained when US passport is renewed?

No new PIO card is required unless 15 yrs is up. Get it endorsed with the new passport # on your PIO card from the embassy/consulate.

Default New PIO card when US passport is renewed?

Does Indian Embassy charge any fee for endorsing new Passport number in the PIO card?

How much time they take to complete this process?

Thanks,

Default what about keeping the old US passport

I thought carrying the old US passport along with the new US passport and PIO card would be sufficient. Anyone else with the same understanding????

I recently visited India(this july) with a new U.S passport and un endorsed PIO card( I did not know endorsement was required). Though i did not have to show the old passport, i carried with me anyway. No issues anywhere.

I was told by consulate staff that the PIO card should be endorsed with the new passport # when you renew your foreign passport. I guess if you are traveling with both the old and new passport it should be ok, since they can verify right there. It is also a hassle endorsing the PIO card everytime you renew your passport. If you try to find out from the embassy/consulate ( that itself is a hassle), they will probably try to sell you for an endorsement. I do not know about the fees. I will be surprised if they didn't have one for endorsement.

sfo counsulate charges a fee for endorsement. I recently travelled to India and carried old passport + new passport and PIO card without endoresement. no issues.
endoresment is needed only if you don't carry your old passport, but I guess you already know that carrying old passport is more beneficial than not carrying it.

Exclamation any recent experience

Hi,

I am traveling in next 10 days to india and didn't realize that my daughters renewed US passport doesn't have PIO endorsement. I do have her old (cancelled) US passport.

I am planning to take both as I do not have time to get it endorsed.

any recent experience or word or advice? Deeply appreciated.

As mentioned by people who have already traveled, it seems there is no issue if you don't get your PIO endorsed with new PP. Just enough to carry old passport.

Since I had enough time before summer travel I got my son's PIO card endorsed with new passport. All they do is mention the new passport number and expiry date with Indian consulate stamp. In PIO card page 1 you'll see they have space left for new passport entries. If you still want to go ahead and apply for endorsement it can be done quickly. If you drop it it in person today, you can pick it up day after tomorrow at travisa office in Houston. If your travel is within 10 days, as you said, I wouldn't bother getting new PP endorsed.

Ofcourse there is fee too. Consulate Fee $23 + Travisa Fee $12 + Money Order Fee $5 + Mailing Fee (if you are mailing) or Gas if your dropping in person. Not worth it in my opinion.

Thank you Veereddy and rkg000.

Since there is no consulate in the state where I reside right now, it will be sending the passport to nearest indian consulate. I am worried, 1. what if I don't get the PP back in time and, 2., what if for any reason PP got lost or anything.

Since carrying old PP just works fine, I will carry both new and old PP along with PIO.

Default My old US passport is lost..Can I still endorse my PIO or do I need new PIO?

My old passport has been confiscated by the immigration desk at airport, as I had reported it lost a few years back(over phone only) but had found it the same day. I was still traveling with same passport until they confiscated it this April..Now I have applied for a new US passport.

Has anyone had a situation where you did not have your old US passport and did the Indian Consulate endorse the PIO with new passport number, or did you have to apply for a new PIO card?

Any help appreciated as I need to travel mid-June!

Thanks,
K.

No need to get a new PIO card if the one you have is valid. I have used the new US passport and old PIO card (PIO card has longer validity) for my kids. There was no issues.
