Default Applying EAD without AP

I am currently on valid H1 status which expires in Nov. 2009. Last year I applied for both EAD and AP which have expired. This time my company said no to renewal. For backup I have applied only for EAD and not for AP as I have valid H1B stamp till Nov. 2009.
Is it ok to apply only for EAD renewal without applying for AP ?
Has anyone done this ?

You can do it. No requirement to have AP to have EAD. I did it that way.

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Did you already receive your EAD ?
Are you planning to apply for AP anytime soon ?

The point to keep in mind is that, AFAIK, if you switch to EAD and then leave USA for any reason, you will need AP to get back in (because you are no longer on H1 status).

Thanks a lot for the warning. In current economic conditions, I might run into this issue. I will apply for AP as soon as I invoke AC21.
