Default Should I hire lawyer if my situation is like this?

My boyfriend and I are planning on getting married soon. He is a U.S. Citizen. I'm a lawful F-1 Visa. I have never been out of status. Clean history. He pass financial requirement to sponsor an immigrants. We have been together for four years and a half. We have bank joint account, share auto insurance. The lawyer quote us $4200 to cover everything and every fees throughout the process. If we file it ourselves, could we get it within 6-7 months like the lawyer said? Does lawyer really have impact on how fast the case would go through?

If we file it ourselves, and something went wrong and the case is delayed or deny, we can hire lawyers to fix it right? What are the common mistake in self-filing? I will be graduated in December 2011 and therefore my F-1 status will be expired. I will have to apply for OPT to extend my stay. Should I self-file the petition and adjustment of status and apply for OPT also? in case of the case been delayed?

Thanks
