Check salary.com. The job title itself has little meaning. What are the requirements for this job (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.? How many years of experience? Would you manage people under you? What is the exact job description? How important is this job for the company? etc.)? My blind guess is the salary distribution would be a Gaussian distribution spanning approximately 60K to 100K, with mean around 80K.

You might save 200-300 a month in rent by living in a suburb. However, doing so would only make sense if your office itself is in a suburb (then stay close to the office) such as in Natick. If your office is in downtown Boston or Boston proper, then you are better off living in Boston (maybe in the student areas like Allston, Brighton, etc.) and commuting by T. If you want to stay in the suburb and come to work by car, parking alone would be in the range of a couple of hundred per month (depending on the exact location). Commuter rail month passes are also a few hundred dollar, as far as I remember.

Default Waltham,MA is a nice but lil costly Boston Suburb :)

I'm consulting at Boston for last 3+ years and i did work at downtown as well as Suburb. If you take a house at Suburb you can still go to downtown without Driving - there is "commuter rail" connecting suburbs as far as 50-60 miles to West,North,South or even more. Waltham , Lexington , Burlington, Woburn these are pretty nice suburbs within 10-15 miles of downtown Boston... These places have Bus service , Commuter Rail & some Subway support (T) to downtown...

I'm a consultant so i know mostly about Bill rates. Billrates run from 75/hr to 125/hr depending on your negotiating skills and core technical expertise - But salary for a 7 yr experienced should not be less than 95K-100K, least would be 90K because house rents are pretty high even in those above suburbs...

PM me if you need more details - Hope it helps !!

Salary would not differ from Boston to Waltham. Check different levels of "Software Engineer" in salary.com, whichever is the closest match and that will give you a ballpark estimate. The actual salary however depends on the skillsets required and how rare they are.

I used to Stay in Boston. It would be advisable to stay in suburb , which is less expensive. However you could save commute time if you stay in city.
Depends on your intrests and Hobbies. Salary ranges from 75 to 100K depending on the responsibilites and size of the company.
Hope this is useful

I am commuting from Providence, RI. It takes 40-50 min by Amtrak. Monthly pass costs $306, but rent or housing is a lot cheeper. 2 Bed 1 BA appartment will be 750-850 on average. Housing prices are 2-3 times lower than Boston suburbs. I work in downtown Boston.

Default Dont make me Jealous...

I was paying about 1700-1800 in a decent 2 BDRM apartment in Burlington,MA and i was also taking commuter rail from Woburn station to Downtown. My commute was 35 mins (train + subway) and monthly pass $151 - but from your post it seems like i was wasting at least 500-600 for another 15 mins.

Tell me you are kidding - RI is so cheap ?? Apartments and neighbours are decent there ?? - i have a 16 month old baby.

No kidding, Bro. You can buy decent 3BR 2BA house for $200,000- $240,000 (depending on neighborhood) 3-5 miles from the T station. Housing in Providence is even cheeper, but big city neighbourhoods are not the best place to raise children.

From which stop to which stop? Providence to South Station is more than an hour and on top you need to add waiting times at each sides, etc. The total time should be 1 hr 30 mins each way, if not more.
