Default Renewing Passport in New York

Hi,

I am planning to renew my Indian passport in New York.

Does anybody here know how much time it will take to get a new passport? Is it better to renew the passport in your home country?

My permanent address in the passport has changed. Will this delay the process?

Please advise....

Thanks,

-Mathew

I recently did this for my family. It now takes 3-5 business days.
Check out link : RENEWAL OF PASSPORT OR NEW PASSPORT - www.indiacgny.org

In short, fill-up an online form, print it, fill up balance details with pen, also fill up a National Verification form, carry photographs (cut it to correct size if required) and carry fee amount (fee in cash is also accepted at counter). Read instructions for any other details.

Note you have to submit passport by 12:15pm or so and they tell you there which day you may pick it up after renewal. There are instructions on how to send it/pick it up by mail also.

Hope it helps.

I recently did mine in person. My advice: Do exactly whatever is written on their website. If you are renewing just your own, then just take original visas, ead etc. If you are going alone and want to do your family's PP, then take notarized copies of the reqd documents. Go early in the morning otherwise there will be long line outside consulate.

I applied on Tuesday morning, got it back on Friday evening.

My permanent address (in India) changed too, did not have any issue.

Got it renewed for 10 years, good luck!

For same day service, you have to pay extra $150 on top of the regular $40 for renewal.

Half the people who come to NY consulate are sent back b'coz of missing documentation. So make sure to carry all the required doc's as mentioned on the website.

Also, if you fill the application online, it forces to make an appointment before you can save and print the documents. Go ahead and do it. The appoinment date that you pick has no meaning. Hope they fix the problem.

You need to take a print out of the forms that you fill online. They won't be submitted to consulate when you submit online. Some people didn't bring the print outs and were asked to go the near by Kinko's.

By the way, no copy or print service available at the consulate.

I recently got it done at the consulate in Chicago. Filled up the online form, printed it and filled the rest with ink, attached photos, two cashiers check, one for the passport fees and one for the courier and sent it via fedex.
Got it back via USPS express in a week.
