Default Life Insurance

I just talked to an AIG life insurance rep and he told me that they do not provide life insurance for those on H1B?

Is that true?

Does having an EAD (but not working on it) makes one eligible?

Please reply.

I dont know about AIG but generally getting life insurance on H1b is a problem. I dont think you get too many options. I got mine through Transamerica. There was a thread before about Life Insurance, I remember people said that they got it through New York Life.

Try to search the forum to find that thread, there was a lot of useful information in that thread.

Arrow if employer provides

then getting into a group life insurance would be much cheaper than buying on your own .. and as long as you do not own a house group insurance would be enough - again my personal opinion ... your situation may be different ...

NorthWestern Mutual will sell you the Life Insurance policy but will impose a small upcharge if you don't have a GC or if you haven't been in the country a certain time (I think it's 7 years...not sure). The upcharge goes away once you complete 7 years.

Lightbulb I have a dumb question ....

when considering life insurance ( term life insurance ) how much insurance you guys are considering ... I mean what is the thumb rule if any ... say 5 time my annual gross income or 10 times my annual gross income ... any indication ... and for people on H1B, what % of excess premium we have to pay than the citizen or GC holders ....

As a thumb rule they say you buy insurance ( term life) for an amount 10x your gross salary.
If you have dependents like spouse and children and mortgage. You have to factor in these things so the insurance value can help your family do ok even if you pass away before the insurance period expires.
I would factor in inflation also while coming up with the amount.
Another thing is you should buy a term life as early in you life as possible, this would help you lock in low monthly or yearly premium.
You should also consider the term of the insurance, 30 yrs is the maximum you can buy. If you are 35 yrs old and 30 yr term is the best for locking in the best rates.
I guess the rest your agent will be able to help you with. One last thing shop around to get the best deal.
